Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series DVD Review
It must be crazy to say that Battlestar Galactica is one of the best television series ever made, simply because I and so many other people have been repeating such a statement for years now. Why say a thing repetitively when almost everyone who you talk to believes you already? That, my friends, is insanity.
The show is now over(except for the upcoming TV movie The Plan, which gives us one last BSG item to hold onto), as sad as that it is. That means it’s time for a complete series package, and a complete series package Sci-Fi Channel has made!
Weighing in at nearly four pounds, Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series arrived on my doorstep a week or two back, packaged in a full-size cardboard box. My eyes lit up as I opened the packaging to discover what it was. I’d been wanting to watch the final few episodes again for a while now, and this Box from Heaven had bequeathed me with the powers to do so!
But really, the coolest thing about the series box set is the box itself. With only four seasons, each vertical side of the package is given a season, each housed in small Cylon-esque boxes that, due to a lack of plastic, weigh in at half the weight of the individual season boxes that have been released over the years. The top half of the box, which comes with a built-in Cylon toy, pulls up partway like some alien pod, making it possible to get at the actual DVDs (there is also a Blu-Ray set, of course). Where I’m going to put this box on my DVD shelf I still haven’t decided yet, but it would be a shame to toss it and just save the DVDs…
Whatever you do, though, don’t be duped into buying this complete series package if you already own the individual seasons or half-seasons. Comparing the special features for each season, the amount of new material is minimal at best. There are episode commentaries, deleted scenes, video blogs and podcasts, but most if not all of these have already been released over the years.
The bottom line is that if you already own the past seasons of Battlestar Galactica, it would be best, on July 28, 2009, to just buy Season 4.5 and be done with it. You know another box set will come out next year that includes The Plan, too, if your heart is really into owning a comprehensive collection.
If you don’t already own the BSG seasons, however, or have yet to invest in the excellence that this show represents, then by all means invest in The Complete Series. This truly is one of the best television shows ever made, with spectacular visual effects (for TV), acting, drama and excitement.
