Guy Ritchie’s career looks to be back on track with the box office success of his latest film and first true blockbuster of his career, Sherlock Holmes. The Robert Downey Jr./Jude Law action-adventure film took in $24.9 million on Christmas Day, and with relatively positive reviews should see good box office throughout the weekend.
However, it’s unlikely Sherlock Holmes will win the weekend, as James Cameron’s Avatar was nipping at its heels with $23.5 million. Given that my attempts to buy IMAX tickets were thwarted by the fact that it’s sold out until Tuesday, it’s safe to assume that Avatar will have the upper hand Saturday and Sunday. Still, it should be a good battle.
Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel earned $14.5 million yesterday, and is doing quite well in its first three days of release. That’s depressing, because it has earned almost as much in three days as the box office failure The Princess and the Frog has in its entire run – and without seeing the new Alvin and the Chipmunks, it’s clear which is the better film.
The new Nancy Meyers movie It’s Complicated made $7.1 million on Christmas.
Here are the top 5:
- Sherlock Holmes – $24.9 million
- Avatar – $23.5 million
- Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel – $14.5 million
- It’s Complicated – $7.1 million
- Up in the Air – $3.7 million
