Review: Family Guy – It’s a Trap!
The third chapter in Seth McFarlane’s Family Guy Star Wars trilogy, It’s a Trap! remakes Return of the Jedi with the Family Guy characters. Stewie as Darth Vader? Priceless. The “movie” overall? Not so much.
I’m not a huge fan of Family Guy for whatever reason, but admit that the show has its moments of genius. It knows how to press the right buttons and be completely off-the-wall random at just the right moments.
But because Family Guy has the potential to be so funny, that’s why It’s a Trap! is all the more disappointing. Having heard great things about the first two Star Wars adaptations, I was expecting big things, but the cartoon is merely a retread of the movie with a few jokes thrown in for good measure.
Really, It’s a Trap! doesn’t deviate all that far from the source material, using a lot of the same dialogue and actually taking the story seriously. Sure, the classic characters have been replaced by Family Guy players, but there’s not much originality or cleverness throughout.
The funniest scene is the scrolling text at the beginning, and it’s all downhill from there. I’ll admit the cannibalistic Ewoks were pretty entertaining, though.
It’s a Trap! is not without its moments and Family Guy fans may find more to enjoy than I did, but I wouldn’t count on it. It’s a Trap! isn’t nearly as absurd or goofy as it needed to be. The best part about it: the 57-minute episode inspired me to watch the real Return of the Jedi tonight.
The episode/movie is now available on DVD and Blu-Ray and comes with a few expected special features.
