Anne Hathaway is Catwoman, Tom Hardy is Bane

I’m probably the last movie website on the planet to report the big casting news of the day, but Anne Hathaway has been cast as Selina Kyle – better known as Catwoman – in the upcoming Batman sequel The Dark Knight Rises.

Anne Hathaway is the latest actor to join the renewed franchise that has serious Oscar pedigree (she was a serious contender to win for her role in the utterly depressing¬†Rachel Getting Married) and should be a good addition. I’m not a huge Hathaway fan, but she certainly has chops – and who am I to question Christopher Nolan?

Let’s take note that Warner Brothers announced that she would be playing Selina Kyle and did not¬†explicitly¬†state she’d be Catwoman, but since this will be Christopher Nolan’s last Batman movie, it’s unlikely she won’t don the black leather.

In more exciting news, Tom Hardy – who has already been attached to the project for awhile – was revealed to be playing the insidious character Bane. Bane was a forgettable villain in the infamously unforgettable Batman and Robin, but his comic book background is more elaborate. Fueled by a mega-steroid called Venom, Bane went on to unleash Hell upon Gotham City, ultimating breaking Bruce Wayne’s back.

Hardy has already played a similar character in Bronson, where he played real-life super criminal Charles Bronson, and should be amazing in The Dark Knight Rises, no matter what incarnation of Bane he plays. As a reminder, Hardy was in Nolan’s 2010 epic Inception.

What do you think of these casting announcements?
