The 20 Best Performances of 2010

Jeremy Renner

No. 17. Jeremy Renner, The Town

Jeremy Renner followed up his star-making performance in The Hurt Locker with a visceral, brutal one in The Town, in which he plays a destructive criminal who threatens to take down his closest friends through a misguided sense of loyalty.

First off, those top 5 were just great performances. Especially Bale and Portman. I have a hard time deciding which of those two I liked better. I think both actors gave their best performances to date quite possibly with their respective roles.

Ryan Reynolds, I would actually rank higher. His was a performance akin to Franco’s in 127 Hours (just not quite as good). But Reynolds gained a lot of credibility with me for Buried. Takes some real chops to pull off a movie by yourself like that.

Also, I still don’t understand what the big deal is about Annette Benning. To me, her performance was nothing special (and I still think that whole movie was boring as crap and highly overrated). But her role, it’s the same thing we see her do all the time really. There was nothing special to it.

One that isn’t on here that I would put is Jennifer Lawrence. Her turn in Winter’s Bone was a very good performance. She truly proved herself as a credible actress with that role.

  • Fair enough on Annette Bening – although I loved the movie (I’ve heard a lot of people really dislike it, though, so it is very divisive).

Jennifer Lawrence almost made the list – but not quite. I’m sure she’ll make this list in future years, though. Well, maybe not for X-Men.

How has nobody mentioned Melissa Leo? You can’t talk about great performances in The Fighter and not have her name come up. Take Kristen F*%&ing Stewart off the list, throw Melissa Leo in at number 3 or 4 and bump everyone else down a peg.

  • It’s interesting… she won the Oscar, but the whole time I was watching the movie I found her character incredibly annoying and not once did I consider it in award-winning performance. That being said, in hindsight, she was very good – but Melissa Leo didn’t strike a chord with me this year (Frozen River, on the other hand…)
