When xXx was released in 2002, it was marketed as “the next generation of spy films” – taking a direct stab at James Bond. It didn’t turn out to be that way as the franchise never fully left the ground, but Diesel turned out to be a decent action star in a movie where the action was, if anything, too over-the-top for its own good. Thankfully the Bourne franchise showed us what the true “next generation of spy films” looks like.
