The Best Superhero Movies of the 21st Century

No. 9. Hellboy (2004)

Proving you don’t need an astronomical budget to blow audiences away, Guillermo del Toro gave us Hellboy, a unique, clever, witty, funny and action-packed comic book adaptation – and Ron Perlman a franchise on which to hang his hat.

No. 8. Spider-Man 2 (2004)

Spider-Man was good, but with the origins story out of the way, Sam Raimi was able to amp up the action and excitement for the well-reviewed sequel. While the film (and the franchise) is still a bit too fluffy for me at times, the movie fires on all the right cylinders, making it an easy choice for this list.

No. 7. X-Men (2000)

Audiences are surprisingly divided over Bryan Singer’s original, which really was the film that kicked off this century’s wave of comic book adaptations. While not without its shortcomings, the movie provides a great introduction to Wolverine – and Hugh Jackman – and the battle between Professor X and Magneto.
