The Best Superhero Movies of the 21st Century

No. 6. The Incredibles (2004)

Only one of two movies on this list not based on other material, Disney-Pixar’s superhero comedy is an astonishingly slick and exciting creation with great special effects and expertly designed action sequences. Though family friendly, the movie is engaging for audiences of all ages, develops a great set of characters (both good and evil) and has more action than most of other films on this list. Why is Pixar making a sequel to Cars when they should be doing The Incredibles 2. Seriously, where’s the sequel?

No. 5. Iron Man (2008)

Just a few years ago, Iron Man was a second tier superhero and Robert Downey Jr. was all but unemployable in anything with a large budget. How things have changed, all due to Jon Favreau’s pitch-perfect Iron Man. Favreau, whose largest film to date had been the family comedy Elf, is now a big-league director and Downey Jr. an A-list superstar.

No. 4. Batman Begins (2005)

It’s strange to think that just a few years ago, the Batman franchise was in the tank due to a certain director who shall not be named here. The franchise was put into the hands of Christopher Nolan, who at the time was best known for directing dramas and small thrillers – not films about characters dressed up as creatures of the night. Though Batman Begins didn’t debut to massive numbers, it cemented the opportunity for a sequel and managed to give Batman the treatment he so longingly deserved.
