The 10 Best Johnny Depp Movies

Johnny Depp is one of the biggest stars working today, but it’s been years since he’s made anything worth the price of admission (here’s a list of Johnny Depp’s worst movies). That could change soon with the release of Black Mass, in which he plays real-life gangster and FBI informant James “Whitey” Bulger.

Given the early Oscar buzz, it’s the perfect time to look back on his 10 best movies to determine why he’s as popular as he is.

No. 10. Sleepy Hollow (1999)

Tim Burton’s spin on Ichabod Crane and the headless horseman is a brooding, entertaining and at times scary affair with, naturally, Johnny Depp as the star. In this version of the timeless tale, Crane (Depp) is an odd New York constable who is sent to the small village of Sleepy Hollow to probe a string of murders. His contemporary investigative ways fly in the face of the seemingly supernatural attacks.

No. 9. Blow (2001)

In Blow, Johnny Depp plays George Jung, the man who started the cocaine trade in the United States. Portrayed as a loving father who just wants to provide his family security, Jung doesn’t realize until it’s too late just how crazy his life has become. The role is a perfect fit for Depp, allowing for his eccentric acting style while still keeping him grounded with a serious, realistic character.

No. 8. What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)

What’s Eating Gilbert Grape is best known for young Leonardo DiCaprio’s Oscar-nominated performance as a mentally handicapped teenager, which often overshadows the fact that Johnny Depp stars as the title character. Depp shows great range as Gilbert, a young man who has spent most of his life caring for his obese mother and brother Arnie.

Bah! This list is 40 percent ridiculous, I say. Scratch Blow (which did), the overrated and melodramatic Platoon, Finding Neverland and Sleepy Hollow. Replace them with Donnie Brasco (hello?), Dead Man, Before Night Falls and Benny and Joon.

I love Johnny Depp. I think he is an incrediable actor. It’s hard to pick Best Depp Movies. But, I think I’s have to go with the Donnie Brasco. Don’t think any other actor could have done justice to this movie, Johnny Depp is the best actor of his generation.
