The Hunger Games made our list of top ten most disappointing movies of 2012, but its sequel The Hunger Games: Catching Fire still managed to make our list of 13 movies to see in 2013 (well, technically, it was in the “13 more” addendum).
Why? The first movie was decent, but it failed to live up to its potential. I blamed much of the film’s lack of suspense on director Gary Ross, who refused to take risks – or at least put on a show. With Catching Fire, Ross has been replaced by Francis Lawrence. Unlike Ross, Lawrence actually has action experience, having helmed the so-so sci-fi thriller Constantine and the Will Smith hit I Am Legend, which was good aside from the CGI zombies.
The second book is also a rehash of the first, and combined with the fact that the movie is guaranteed to be a massive hit, Lawrence should be allowed to be a little more aggressive than Ross.
