No. 8. The Cabin in the WoodsWhat begins as a goofy horror movie about a group of college students who, while on vacation at a cabin (in the woods), are brutally murdered by a family of zombie hillbillies turns into one of the most outrageously, off-the-wall and unpredictable events of the year. Words cannot describe. It must be seen to be believed. |
No. 7. Wreck-It RalphIt might be a rehash of Toy Story, but oh well. Wreck-It Ralph hits magic with its inspired story about video game characters brought to life, effectively appealing to the nostalgia of parents and the imagination of children. Wreck-It Ralph may not be the deepest of animated films, but it is consistently funny and entertaining. |
No. 6. 21 Jump StreetThe adaptation of the hit Johnny Depp television show had no right to be as good as it was, but the unlikely chemistry between Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum combined with a silly script turned 21 Jump Street into a surprisingly funny box office hit. The movie falters in the final act, but there are enough laughs early on to make it worth a viewing or two. |
No. 5. Seven PsychopathsSeven Psychopaths isn’t for everyone. It’s a bit strange, a lot random and it is no In Bruges, but the off-the-wall and R-rated humor works more often than not. Christopher Walken turns in a great performance, Sam Rockwell and Woody Harrelson do what they do best, but it’s Colin Farrell who remains an underappreciated comedic talent. |
No. 4. Silver Linings PlaybookBradley Cooper plays a bipolar mess of a man, whose biggest skill is to speak his mind and dig himself into a deeper hole. Jennifer Lawrence plays a widow who attempts to drown her depression by slutting herself out wherever possible. The makings of one of the most romantic comedies of the year? Yes. One of the funniest? Absolutely. |
