The 10 Best Matt Damon Movies

Share:

Matt Damon stars in the new summer movie Elysium, so naturally we had to look back on his career, which now spans over 15 years (does that make you feel old?). Whether he’s ripping apart conservative journalists about teachers or punching people in the head with Bibles, Matt Damon knows how to entertain. Here are the top ten Matt Damon movies of all time:

No. 10. We Bought a Zoo (2011)

Largely overlooked due to mixed reviews and for whatever other reasons, We Bought a Zoo is Cameron Crowe’s best movie since Almost Famous. As for Matt Damon, he tackles a surprisingly complex character, even if that character isn’t as memorable as some of his other roles.

No. 9. The Rainmaker (1997)

The Rainmaker, based on a book by John Grisham, is a different kind of courtroom drama: it’s smaller, subtler, and funnier. It’s also Matt Damon’s first major starring role. With a supporting cast that includes Danny DeVito, Claire Danes and Jon Voight and an us-against-the-man story, The Rainmaker is well worth revisitng.

No. 8. The Bourne Identity (2002)

The Doug Liman original doesn’t compare to the Paul Greengrass sequels that followed, but The Bourne Identity still stands up surprisingly well and introduces us to the character that took Matt Damon to the next level. Still, no Carlos?

No. 7. The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)

The third movie in the Bourne franchise is widely regarded as the best one, but for whatever reason I don’t love it quite as much as others. Maybe it’s the sort-of-shrugworthy ending, or maybe it’s that the filmmakers missed their best opportunity to introduce… Carlos. I just want Carlos, dammit.

Seriously Saving Private Ryan? You mentioned it but still, he plays like 5 minutes in the movie? What about The Talented Mr. Ripley? He was brilliant. And Invictus?

  • Allister Cooper

Bravo! Bourne reigns supreme! But let’s not remember his comedic side in Brothers Grimm alongside Heath Ledger. A happy viewer they made some lucky guy!

He’s glorious in dogma. And also gave an awesome performance in the informant. But seriously.. dogma is number one.

He still plays a pretty pivotal role in Saving Private Ryan, but your point is valid. I need to re-watch Talented Mr. Riply – very good. Invictus… nothing special.
