No. 6. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

The first Hunger Games was a shrugworthy affair, largely thanks to its risk-free adaptation approach and safe (read: bland) direction. With a new director and guaranteed money in the bank, I am hopeful that the sequel – which pretty much has the same plot as the first one – will be a significant improvement and take a few risks along the way.

No. 5. 12 Years a Slave

Oscar buzz is through the roof for this drama directed by Steve McQueen (Shame, Hunger), about a free black man (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who is abducted and sold into slavery in pre-Civil War times. Michael Fassbender stars as a ruthless slave owner and Brad Pitt plays an abolitionist.

No. 4. The Wolf of Wall Street

Anytime Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese collaborate on a film, great things can happen (yes, even in the flawed Shutter Island). Two of DiCaprio’s best performances have come in The Departed and The Aviator, and that’s more than enough reason to check out The Wolf of Wall Street, about the rise and hard fall of stockbroker Jordan Belfort.

No. 3. Captain Phillips

Tom Hanks looks to resurrect his career in this true-life drama about a sea captain who is taken hostage by Somali pirates. Helping Hanks is director Paul Greengrass, who has proven he can maximize suspense in any story. Now about that movie title…

No. 2. Don Jon

Joseph Gordon Levitt directs himself in this movie where he plays a porn addict who begins a relationship with Scarlett Johansson. He spends the rest of the movie contemplating why he is addicted to porn when he is dating Scarlett Johansson.

No. 1. Gravity

The trailers are arguably the most enthralling of the year: a single shot – courtesy of director Alfonso Cuaron – of a space shuttle getting struck by a piece of space debris, the impact of which hurtles a spacewalking Sandra Bullock into a place where no one can hear you scream. Crappy situation, and potentially the most gripping and unique movie of the fall. Oh, and the movie also stars George Clooney.

Get a hold of yourself! (I’m BARELY interested.) I’m afraid you’ve begun to drift off into space on this one.

Rob, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but everyone I’ve talked with says it is one of the most intense movies in years. You may be in the minority on this one…

  • eriksamdahl
