The 33 Movies to See in 2017

5. Star Wars: Episode VIII

Let’s hope that after the highly entertaining but somewhat safe The Force Awakens, Disney moves the franchise in new directions. No more Death Stars, please!

4. Alien: Covenant

Ridley Scott returns to the franchise that put him on the map in the first place in this prequel to Alien and sequel to Prometheus. Sold.

3. Logan

Hugh Jackman returns one final time as Wolverine, in which he plays an older, weaker mutant who lives in a dystopian future. The first trailer was amazing, and with director James Mangold returning, this is the comic book movie to beat in 2017.

2. Dunkirk

As a Christopher Nolan junkie, I won’t hide my anticipation for this World War II action-drama, about an ill-fated British mission.

1. War for the Planet of the Apes

If you’ve forgotten, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was one of the best movies of 2014. Director Matt Reeves and star Andy Serkis is back for this follow-up, which also stars Woody Harrelson and Judy Greer.
