November 25th, 2011
conan-the-barbarian

I live, I love, I slay, and I am content. So says star Jason Mamoa in 2011’s remake Conan the Barbarian. At least that makes one of us.

Better Late Than Never: Immortals Movie Review

November 25th, 2011
immortals-mickey-rourke

A year after Clash of the Titans proved to be a box office hit, it’s not surprising that a copycat emerged to try and share in its glory. Also not surprising: its copycat, Immortals, from director Tarsem Singh (The Cell, The Fall), is a superior movie in every way.

Arnold, Willis and Stallone in First Expendables 2 Poster!

November 19th, 2011
expendables-2-poster

Arnold Schwarzenegger. Bruce Willis. Sylvestor Stallone. They briefly appeared together on screen in 2010, but Schwarzenegger was still the Governator at the time and Bruce Willis had better things to do. Flash ahead two years and The Expendables 2 is promising more of the three actors, not just cameos. Time will tell, but let’s repeat those names once more. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Bruce Willis. Sylvestor Stallone. It’s like a sweet wine teasing the palate.

The movie also stars other “reputable” action stars like Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme. For action fans, that’s a pretty awesome cast… even better than the first one.

The Hunger Games Trailer Redeems Itself

November 16th, 2011
hunger-games-jennifer-lawrence

A few months ago during one of MTV’s stupid awards shows, Lionsgate foolishly released a “teaser trailer” promoting the highly anticipated 2012 release of The Hunger Games. The marketing engine had been building strong buzz for months leading up to the awards show and had been quite effective at doing so – I’d never heard of the books before but even I was starting to believe in the hype.

Attack the Block Movie Review

November 14th, 2011
attack-the-block

When aliens attack, they better not land in inner city South London. That’s the message in Attack the Block, the entertaining but inconsequential action-comedy about a bunch of pitch-black aliens with glowing razor-sharp teeth who meet their match in a group of ragtag hoodlums.

New Underworld Awakening Poster

November 12th, 2011
underworld-awakening

Ignoring the third movie, the Underworld franchise has delivered some cheap thrills over the years and lots of tight black leather-clad Kate Beckinsale, which is more than can be said for a lot of movies. With Beckinsale’s career not exactly taking off, it’s no surprise that the beautiful actress is returning to another entry in the franchise.

Screen Gems just released a new poster for Underworld Awakening – check it out below.

The Decline of Jurassic Park in Marvelous Blu-ray

October 31st, 2011
jurassic-park

Six. That’s how many times I watched Jurassic Park in theaters. Nearly 20 years later, the Steven Spielberg movie continues to be an entertaining and exciting classic that can be re-watched over and over again. Its sequels… not so much.

Jurassic Park, The Lost World and Jurassic Park III were released last week on Blu-ray for the first time in an “Ultimate Trilogy” package, which naturally features a new documentary that looks back on the franchise, offers even more behind-the-scenes footage and includes all of the archival featurettes released in previous editions. More importantly, the Ultimate Trilogy set gives fans the ability to watch the three movies in “high definition” for the first time.

It also gives me the opportunity to recount on the decline of quality from one movie to the next.

The Movie Trailer for ‘Chronicle’ Makes Me Pee My Pants

October 26th, 2011
chronicle-poster

But in a good way. If you haven’t watched the movie trailer for the upcoming movie Chronicle, which comes to theaters on February 3, 2012, you should do so now. It’s about three teenage friends who stumble across something very mysterious and begin to develop superpowers – namely invincibility, flight and the ability to move things with their minds. While their newfound abilities make for great fun, things begin to spiral out of control, especially when one friend takes things too far.

Real Steel: Not Real Good, Not Real Bad

October 9th, 2011
real-steel

The glory days of boxing are behind it, in real life and on the silver screen. Modern boxers pale in comparison to the popularity of their predecessors.  Boxing movies continue to be a staple of pop culture, but they reflect on fighters of yesteryear. Boxing is a fading sport, even a faded sport. So it’s only natural to replace those sacks of flesh and bones with fight-to-the-death robots!

Is Jackie Chan’s 100th Movie Any Good?

October 8th, 2011
1911-jackie-chan

Jackie Chan’s 100th film is now playing in select theaters, and if you were unaware, you’re not alone. Unlike the movies he’s known for, 1911, about the Wuchang Rebellion that overthrew the Qing Dynasty, is a gritty, serious and violent war epic. It’s unfortunately also a terrible movie.

New Stills from The Avengers Movie

October 5th, 2011
avengers-thor

Easily one of the most anticipated movies of 2012, The Avengers is starting to get its marketing engine churning with the release of several movie stills. The latest photograph depicts Thor and Captain America staring up at some unknown threat, presumably a gigantic, radioactive and naked Scarlett Johansson. Other movie pictures feature Samuel L. Jackson firing a gun, Johansson and Jeremy Renner shooting at something with a green screen and Johansson again, looking all cool as crap explodes around her. I wish I were that cool.
