New Stills from The Avengers Movie

October 5th, 2011
avengers-thor

Easily one of the most anticipated movies of 2012, The Avengers is starting to get its marketing engine churning with the release of several movie stills. The latest photograph depicts Thor and Captain America staring up at some unknown threat, presumably a gigantic, radioactive and naked Scarlett Johansson. Other movie pictures feature Samuel L. Jackson firing a gun, Johansson and Jeremy Renner shooting at something with a green screen and Johansson again, looking all cool as crap explodes around her. I wish I were that cool.

Drive: The Best Movie of 2011?

September 16th, 2011
drive-2011

When will criminals learn? Stick to your guns, stick to your rules, and things will be fine. Deviate from your simple guidelines, mix in a love interest and let things get personal, and all things will go to hell. Then again, if you’re the bad guys you know you should never mess with the quiet guy who’s the protagonist in a movie, especially if he looks like Ryan Gosling and is featured in the movie Drive. Because he’ll f**k them up, and the movie will blow audiences away.

The Eagle Movie Review

September 12th, 2011
the-eagle

Though the genre was submitted to the historical archives several years ago, Roman era-based action dramas continue to rear their ugly heads, typically with much lower budgets and B-grade actors. Such is the case with Focus Features’ The Eagle, a valiant but ultimately futile effort.

September 10th, 2011
x-men-first-class-james-mcavoy

It was the summer of comic book movies, but few if any received the critical praise that X-Men: First Class received. Whether it was due to lowered expectations set by the last two movies – X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine – or something else, audiences and critics alike lapped up Matthew Vaughn’s prequel like slobbering dogs, lavishing it with praise that, frankly, it doesn’t deserve.

Nevertheless, despite its glaring flaws, X-Men: First Class is an entertaining movie that will fit nicely in a home collection. It’s now available on DVD and Blu-Ray.

An Extremely Late Review: Cowboys & Aliens

September 4th, 2011
cowboys-and-aliens-harrison-ford

What happens when you combine James Bond, Indiana Jones, the director of Iron Man, cowboys and aliens – oh, and Olivia Wilde – stir them all up in a $160-million-budgeted pot and launch the resulting sci-fi western to the big screen? Not what you’d think. Mildly enjoyable but ultimately disappointing, Cowboys & Aliens has the elements of success, except director Jon Favreau forgot to make it fun.
