Priest Movie Review: Not So Heavenly

August 18th, 2011
priest-paul-bettany

Paul Bettany is at it again, trying to be a Goody Two-Shoes by saving humanity from eternal damnation in Priest, on DVD and Blu-Ray this week. If Priest looks a lot like 2009′s Legion, which starred Bettany as an angel trying to save humanity from eternal damnation, you’re not alone. And like Legion, Priest falls short of its intended goal, whatever it was, seemingly satisfied with being mediocre.

Superman’s Costume Revealed

August 4th, 2011
superman-2013

Despite not debuting until 2013, the first official photo from the upcoming Zack Snyder Superman rebootMan of Steel – has appeared online. Fanboy reaction has been mixed, but I don’t see what’s not too like. Sure, the scaly costume is a bit odd, but the muted, deeper colors were a much needed improvement. The cape could well be CGI, but who really cares? Noticeably hidden by shadow is Superman’s nether-region, which could or could not include the red tights.

July 23rd, 2011
captain-america

The comic book adaptations have come fast and furiously this summer, yet none have established themselves among the genre’s best. Captain America: The First Avenger is the final 2011 entry, and like the other Marvel films, it’s entertaining but not much more.

It has ended. One of the best franchises in cinematic history is now over, The Boy Who Lived now a past event. But what an event it was. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is an epic conclusion to the storied franchise, a penultimate finale that sizzles with emotion, suspense and action – and the sad acceptance that there are no more Harry Potter movies to tell.

The Warrior’s Way: Blood, Swords and Blu-Ray

July 6th, 2011
warriors-way-bluray

First there were spaghetti westerns, but the new trend is rice westerns, a violent blend of Old West and Far West. The latest incarnation is The Warrior’s Way, a slick but mindless action tale about a great swordsman who travels to America to find peace – but only finds more bad guys to slay. From first-time writer/director Sngmoo Lee, The Warrior’s Way is entertaining but sadly hollow.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon Movie Review

July 4th, 2011
transformers-3

Love him or hate him, Michael Bay knows how to direct action. As much as the infamous director is known for hammy dialogue, basic plots and lots of slow-motion shots, there’s hardly an action fan who doesn’t have at least one Michael Bay movie – let alone several – in his or her collection. With Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Bay delivers another must-have action movie to the world, perhaps his best in over a decade.

The first trailer for the upcoming action movie Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol is now online, and it looks… pretty damn awesome. The choice of music is a bit questionable, but it’s clear the marketing team is trying to separate itself from the last three films.

New Captain America Trailer and Poster

June 24th, 2011
captain-america

Is anyone else looking forward to Captain America: The First Avenger? After Thor, which was good but merely a prelude to something bigger, X-Men: First Class, which was okay but a little disappointing, and Green Lantern, which was… well, it is what it is… Captain America is this year’s last opportunity to deliver a blow-your-socks-off superhero story.

At first glance, it may look like a typical Jason Statham movie. But then you realize Robert De Niro is in it. Oh, and Clive Owen, too. Suddenly, Killer Elite looks just a little bit better.

The first movie trailer for Killer Elite is now online, and it doesn’t look half-bad. The plot involves Jason Statham taking off his shirt and kicking, punching and shooting people, Clive Owen being bad with a nasty mustache and Robert De Niro playing the old mentor who has been kidnapped.
