It has ended. One of the best franchises in cinematic history is now over, The Boy Who Lived now a past event. But what an event it was. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is an epic conclusion to the storied franchise, a penultimate finale that sizzles with emotion, suspense and action – and the sad acceptance that there are no more Harry Potter movies to tell.

The Warrior’s Way: Blood, Swords and Blu-Ray

July 6th, 2011
warriors-way-bluray

First there were spaghetti westerns, but the new trend is rice westerns, a violent blend of Old West and Far West. The latest incarnation is The Warrior’s Way, a slick but mindless action tale about a great swordsman who travels to America to find peace – but only finds more bad guys to slay. From first-time writer/director Sngmoo Lee, The Warrior’s Way is entertaining but sadly hollow.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon Movie Review

July 4th, 2011
transformers-3

Love him or hate him, Michael Bay knows how to direct action. As much as the infamous director is known for hammy dialogue, basic plots and lots of slow-motion shots, there’s hardly an action fan who doesn’t have at least one Michael Bay movie – let alone several – in his or her collection. With Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Bay delivers another must-have action movie to the world, perhaps his best in over a decade.

The first trailer for the upcoming action movie Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol is now online, and it looks… pretty damn awesome. The choice of music is a bit questionable, but it’s clear the marketing team is trying to separate itself from the last three films.

New Captain America Trailer and Poster

June 24th, 2011
captain-america

Is anyone else looking forward to Captain America: The First Avenger? After Thor, which was good but merely a prelude to something bigger, X-Men: First Class, which was okay but a little disappointing, and Green Lantern, which was… well, it is what it is… Captain America is this year’s last opportunity to deliver a blow-your-socks-off superhero story.

mechanic-jason-statham

From the director of Con Air and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider comes The Mechanic, the latest no-effort Jason Statham action film where the bald package of testosterone plays an efficient assassin who takes the son of his latest hit and former friend as an apprentice. Leon the Professional this is not.

Super 8 Movie Review

June 10th, 2011
super-8

J.J. Abrams, one of the better directors working today, and Steven Spielberg, one of the best directors of all time, collaborate for the first time for the nostalgic sci-fi thriller Super 8. An amalgam of Spielberg’s and Abrams’ styles, Super 8 is an entertaining popcorn flick, but sadly one that never reaches its potential.

MegaMind Movie Review

June 9th, 2011
megamind

The second animated film of 2010 to feature a goofy super villain as the protagonist, Megamind‘s fall release appeared to be too little, too late, despite starring the voices of Will Ferrell, Tina Fey and Brad Pitt. Thankfully, the DreamWorks Animation comedy is significantly different than Despicable Me, much closer to The Incredibles in tone and delivery.
