Review: ‘Iron Man 3′ Has Plenty of Laughs, Few Thrills

May 3rd, 2013
iron-man-3

And people said Iron Man 2 was stupid. Robert Downey Jr. is back in the first post-Avengers Marvel film, and boy is it a cluttered mess. Featuring a bland villain, a nonsensical plot and major tonal imbalance, Iron Man 3 has plenty of laughs but very few thrills. But hey, at least Robert Downey Jr. is in it.

5 Reasons World War Z is Going to Flop

May 1st, 2013
world-war-z-brad-pitt

Who else thinks World War Z is going to be a flat-out disaster? Yeah, I didn’t think I was alone.

Vanity Fair just released a preview of their June 2013 exclusive with Brad Pitt, which provides more detail into what we already knew: the production has been a big, bloated mess. While there is a part of me that is morbidly curious to see the movie – and I hope, hope, hope that I am wrong and that the movie will be a fun thrill ride – this seemed like the best opportunity to outline why World War Z is prone to be a big, awful flop.

Star Trek TNG: The Best of Both Worlds Blu-ray Review

April 30th, 2013
star-trek-best-of-both-worlds

“I am Locutus of Borg. Resistance is futile.”

These are the defining words spoken in one of the best story arcs of Star Trek: The Next Generation, now embodied in high definition. The Best of Both Worlds is now on Blu-ray, and not only does the two-episode “movie” look fantastic, it still holds up extremely well.

Watch the First Thor 2 Trailer

April 24th, 2013
thor-2

Thor is back, and so is Natalie Portman looking all Natalie Portman-ish! Disney and Marvel have released the first action-packed teaser trailer for Thor: The Dark World, which looks like the first one only with an even badder bad guy. The teaser isn’t all that great in the scheme of things, but it has some juicy nuggets.

Review: Tom Cruise in a State of ‘Oblivion’

April 19th, 2013
oblivion-tom-cruise

The definition of oblivion is “the state of being unaware or unconscious of what is happening,” which, when taking the new Tom Cruise movie Oblivion into consideration, is ironic because the filmmakers, to a fault, are acutely aware of what their movie is. Oblivion is full of good ideas, but unfortunately those good ideas are, scene by scene, pulled from other, better movies. Despite this, the movie serves as good, popcorn fun.

Review: Is ‘Django Unchained’ Tarantino’s Best Movie?

April 16th, 2013
django-unchained-jaime-foxx

When Quentin Tarantino is lurking, no genre is safe. After checking crime, kung fu, grindhouse and war movies off his list – not to mention whatever Pulp Fiction was – Quentin Tarantino turns his sights on westerns with Django Unchained. Funny, action-packed and highly entertaining, Django Unchained may not be Tarantino’s deepest of films – but it is his most accessible.

April 15th, 2013
catching-fire

For those of you who were wise enough not to watch the MTV Movie Awards, the first Hunger Games: Catching Fire teaser trailer is now online for your viewing pleasure. The teaser (which, at two and a half minutes is hardly a teaser) sells the movie well – in fact, incredibly well.

The Tomb: A Throwback to the Eighties Action Movie?

April 1st, 2013
the-tomb-sylvestor-stallone

The 1980s is considered by many as the golden era of action movies, and introduced us to such names as the T-101 Terminator, Rocky Balboa, John Rambo, John Matrix, Cobra, and the Predator. It’s safe to say I was, and still am, a huge fan of these 80s action movies and heroes. They were so over the top and as a result the larger than life stars who played in these action movies have become some of my all-time favorites.

Review: Well, ‘G.I. Joe’ is Better Than the Last One

March 28th, 2013
gi-joe-retaliation

You know you’re in trouble when the best line of dialogue in an entire movie is a Jay Z quote. Then again, I don’t know if I was in trouble. The new G.I. Joe: Retaliation is leaps and bounds better than its predecessor, with fast-paced action sequences and the charisma of The Rock pulsing through every scene, but it’s also absurd, absurdly absurd and fucking ridiculously absurd. Whether that’s good or bad… I just don’t know.

Review: The ‘Red Dawn’ Is Exactly What You’d Expect

March 5th, 2013
red-dawn-josh-hutcherson

Back in 1984, the Soviet Union invaded the United States. Thankfully, Patrick Swayze was there to stop them. Thirty years later, those pesky communists are back at again, opting to invade the strategically unimportant Spokane, Washington in the unnecessary and uninspired remake Red Dawn.

Skyfall Revisited: Five Ways It Works, Five Ways It Doesn’t

February 16th, 2013
severine-james-bond-skyfall

Is Skyfall the best James Bond movie ever? I’d argue no, but it’s a good argument to have. There are merits to such a question – Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Road to Perdition) is without question the most accomplished and legitimate director to ever take the reigns of the franchise, and he delivers a slick and beautifully crafted film – but there are also understandable criticisms.

Review: Stallone Puts a ‘Bullet to the Head’

February 1st, 2013
bullet-to-the-head

First Arnold, now Sly. What a violent flashback to the 1980s January is turning out to be. In Bullet to the Head, the Italian Stallion stars as a hit man (shocker) who, after his client turns on him (shocker), sets out to get his revenge (another shocker). The twist: he forges an unlikely – as in really unlikely – partner with a by-the-book cop.
