Resident Evil: Retribution Movie Review

December 18th, 2012
resident-evil-retribution

I have come to the conclusion that the apocalyptic world Paul W.S. Anderson has created in his Resident Evil franchise is exactly how he wants the world to be. Every movie he makes pushes humanity closer and closer to the brink of evolving into monstrous, CGI-animated creatures.

‘The Hobbit’ Review: Peter Jackson Takes a Serious Risk

December 14th, 2012
hobbit-gollum

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, but Peter Jackson thinks otherwise. In his heralded return to Middle Earth, the director of the award-winning Lord of the Rings franchise keeps many things the same but makes one very risky change that has a detrimental effect on the overall film. Your opinion of the film will rely heavily on whether you can get past this alteration.

Review: ‘The Bourne Legacy’ Hits Blu-ray

December 11th, 2012
bourne-legacy

When it was announced that a fourth Jason Bourne movie was being developed without star Matt Damon or director Paul Greengrass, I was worried. When it was announced that returning writer Tony Gilroy was taking over the directing reigns and making a Jason Bourne movie that would include its main character, I was ready to throw in the towel. Having now watched The Bourne Legacy, I wish Universal Pictures would have thrown in the towel long ago.

Start Trek Into Darkness Poster and Teaser Trailer

December 4th, 2012
star-trek-into-darkness-poster

Paramount Pictures has released the cool new movie poster for Star Trek Into Darkness, the sequel to the hit sci-fi action movie that debuts in 2013. I acknowledge that I am not the first to point this out, but it looks like the villain (Benedict Cumberbatch) has laid waste to Gotham city, not unlike what is seen in several of the Dark Knight Rises movie posters. With an obscure Star Trek logo sketched from a ravaged city, the posters look eerily similar in theme.

Review: The Expendables 2 Relies on Low Expectations

November 19th, 2012
expendables-2

Old people just don’t know when to quit. Sylvester Stallone and the rest of his washed-up gang are back in The Expendables 2, a dumb, silly sequel to a movie that needed to be dumber and sillier. The first Expendables was a big, fat disappointment for a multitude of reasons. The Expendables 2 proves that low expectations can pay dividends. Sort of.

Twilight is no Harry Potter, according to the box office numbers for the opening weekend of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, presumably and hopefully the last entry in the wretched franchise.

Blu-Ray Review: Savages

November 13th, 2012
savages-oliver-stone

After a lackluster theatrical run that found the $45-million Savages earning only $77 million worldwide – hardly a profitable venture after marketing and print costs are taken into account – the Oliver Stone action-thriller tears its way onto Blu-ray and DVD.

James Bond is seeing green unlike anything he has seen before. Box office reports have the critically praised 007 film Skyfall debuting to $87.8 million – not counting the $2.2 million it earned on Thursday in IMAX theaters – the biggest opening for a James Bond movie ever. Even when adjusted for inflation.

Review: Is ‘Skyfall’ the Best James Bond Ever?

November 8th, 2012
skyfall-daniel-craig

Four years after Quantum of Solace and two years after MGM filed for bankruptcy, Bond – James Bond, that is – is back in what is undoubtedly one of the best films of the franchise. Directed by Oscar winner Sam Mendes, best known for American Beauty, Skyfall is grand, sophisticated and abnormally personal. Its only problem: it doesn’t always feel like a Bond film.

Iron Man Suffers in the First Iron Man 3 Trailer

October 24th, 2012
iron-man-3-ben-kingsley

I’m a sucker for depressing movie trailers, especially when you know the good guys are eventually going to prevail in the end. In the upcoming Iron Man 3, Tony Stark looks like he’s in for a sh*t show. A mysterious terrorist named The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) wages war on Stark and his alter ego Iron Man by obliterating his mansion and apparently stealing his suits, and that’s just the beginning.

Review: ‘Alex Cross’ is the Best Kind of Awful

October 19th, 2012
alex-cross-tyler-perry

The funniest movie of the year is Alex Cross. Tyler Perry stars in the serious crime thriller, which accomplishes two great feats: it made me laugh so hard I cried, and it reminded me why I avoid Tyler Perry movies at all costs.
