Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance Review

June 11th, 2012
ghost-rider-spirit-of-vengeance

Way back in 2007, I watched a movie called Ghost Rider. And way back in 2007, I wrote a movie review that said it is “one of the worst movies I have seen in a long time.” And way back in 2007, I lamented, “Are we going to suffer a sequel?” After earning $237 million worldwide, Marvel said “yes”, which means that Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance exists. In the movie, people pay for their sins, and the audience pays as well. We’re the reason a sequel exists. We deserve to watch this wretched movie a thousand times over.

Prometheus Movie Review

June 8th, 2012
prometheus

Blade Runner and Alien. Ridley Scott is responsible for both of them, two of the most renowned sci-fi movies of all time. After 30 years, the Gladiator director returns to the genre with Prometheus, a quasi-prequel to Alien that seeks to explain the origins of mankind, and at least hint at how those acid-spewing, face-hugging teddy bears came to be. A beautiful and suspenseful action-thriller, Prometheus isn’t perfect, but it still stands among the best of the genre.

Quentin Tarantino’s wildly anticipated new movie Django Unchained, starring Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz and Leonardo DiCaprio, arrives this Christmas (naturally). Six months out, the first movie trailer is here. A spaghetti western with a twist only Tarantino could provide, Django Unchained is about a freed slave (Foxx) who is transformed into a bad ass assassin by a German bounty hunter (Waltz). Django proceeds to hunt down the evil plantation owner (DiCaprio) that owns his wife.

Men in Black 3 Movie Review

June 6th, 2012
men-in-black-3

Last time we saw Agent J and K, it was ten years ago and had something to do with a sexy, tentacled bad guy and a clueless Rosario Dawson walking around aimlessly for a couple of hours. No one was asking for another Men in Black, but director Barry Sonnenfeld is back again with Men in Black III, which has Will Smith traveling back in time in search of a funny concept. He doesn’t find one.

Act of Valor: Made for Soldiers, No One Else

June 5th, 2012
act-of-valor

Just when you thought you’d seen your last over-the-top U.S. military commercial, Hollywood goes a step further: it makes a two-hour-long promotional video, calls it a movie and charges filmgoers money to watch it. For what it is intended to do – appeal to the uber-patriotic and military families – Act of Valor does its job. For the rest of us, it’s fubar filmmaking.

Snow White and the Huntsman: Sexy But Hollow

June 1st, 2012

Snow White and the Huntsman is like the bitchy girl in high school. She’s attractive, sexy and stylish, but cold and hollow underneath. She may be worth a ride or two around the block, but she’s never going to meet the parents. She’s nice to look at, even entertaining, but leaves you wanting more.

After a four year hiatus, Will Smith returns to theaters with Men in Black III, which reunites the star with co-star Tommy Lee Jones (and Josh Brolin, playing a younger version of Agent M). While the buzz for the sequel isn’t nearly as strong as some other movies debuting this summer, Will Smith’s box office potential should not be underestimated: his movies have raked in well over a billion dollars and multiple Oscar nominations.

Now seems like the perfect time to look at the best Will Smith movies, dating back nearly 20 years (now doesn’t that make you feel old?).

Red Tails Exceeds Low Expectations

May 22nd, 2012
red-tails

Don’t judge a book by its cover. The theme runs strong through Red Tails, about the Tuskegee Airmen in World War II who faced not only hardship from the Nazis but more-than-simmering racism from within their own ranks. The common phrase can also be said about the movie itself, which, while far from being a great war movie, is a surprisingly entertaining one.

Chronicle Flies onto DVD & Blu-ray

May 15th, 2012
chronicle

Three Seattle teenagers develop super powers and do wonderful things with them, like scaring little girls and playing practical jokes on unsuspecting strangers, in the entertaining but far from great sci-fi action film Chronicle. Oh, and one gets corrupted by his newfound powers and takes it out on the Emerald City and all those who stand in his way.

Seattle Chronicles: Six Classic Seattle Movies

May 14th, 2012
chronicle-space-needle

As movie viewers, we are most accustomed to blockbuster movie settings like the sprawling landscapes of the Midwest or the bright city lights of New York and Los Angeles. In fact, the superhero genre has even gone a step further by giving birth to faux cities like Metropolis and Gotham City. But up in the Pacific Northwest lies beautiful but less-popular Seattle, a gem that has played host to many popular flicks.

Now on Blu-ray: Underworld Awakening Movie Review

May 8th, 2012
underworld-awakening

The last time I saw Kate Beckinsale in skintight black leather was… in my dreams… but before that, it was in Underworld: Evolution, the second film in the stylized franchise about vampires, werewolves and soft core porn. After merely a cameo appearance in the third, nearly series-slaying Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, Beckinsale, having not been in a better movie since, is back as Selene, and everything else is back to the way they were.

The Avengers Shatters Box Office Records

May 6th, 2012
avengers-black-widow

Thor’s hammer, Iron Man’s steel, the Hulk’s smash, Captain America’s patriotism and Black Widow’s cleavage combined for quite a wallop over the weekend as The Avengers opened to $200.3 million at the domestic box office over the weekend, according to BoxOffice.com. That blows past the $169.2 record held by last year’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, and sets a whole new benchmark for what defines a blockbuster.

A $200 million opening!
