The Three Musketeers Fights Its Way Onto DVD

March 13th, 2012
three-musketeers

The classic Alexandre Dumas tale The Three Musketeers is resurrected yet again for the big screen, bringing to life everything from the book, from extensive swordplay to computer-generated airships. Director Paul W.S. Anderson, who unfortunately makes a lot more movies than director Paul Thomas Anderson, does what he does best: make an action movie on a seemingly nonexistent script. Somehow, he sort of pulls it off. Almost. And sort of.

Johnny Depp as Tonto Is All Kinds of Wrong

March 10th, 2012

Walt Disney Pictures has released the first still image from the upcoming movie The Lone Ranger, to be directed by Gore Verbinski and starring his Pirates of the Caribbean caricature Johnny Depp… not as the title character, but as his Native American sidekick Tonto. The movie sounded like a disaster from day one: a bloated $200+ million budget, a script filled with werewolves and other CGI monsters and, frankly, the casting of megastar Depp as the sidekick.

John Carter Movie Review: As Barren as Mars

March 9th, 2012
john-carter

Just when you thought you’d seen all the Star Wars prequels you found poorly written, clunky and devoid of captivating characters comes John Carter, a Disney-fied space epic that is poorly written, clunky and devoid of captivating characters. Its one saving grace: it makes you appreciate George Lucas’s [forgotten] skill when it comes to directing explosive action, something that is so sorely lacking in John Carter.

Men in Black 3 Trailer Says It’s Time to End this Franchise

March 6th, 2012
men-in-black-3

I loved the first Men in Black movie. Its sequel, the intelligently titled Men in Black 2, was mediocre at best, but still entertaining at times. Now, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are back for another dose of J and K, but I have a feeling I’ll be less interested in the film’s time travel storyline and more interested in checking my watch to see how much longer remains before I can leave the theater and do something more entertaining.

This Means War Movie Review

February 17th, 2012
this-means-war

It’s the decision every man faces in life: do you bug the home of the woman you’re dating? Even more common: do you or do you not spy on the woman while she’s going on a date with your best friend and coworker, using a Predator Drone aircraft? These are the quandaries on-screen pals Chris Pine and Tom Hardy face as they both attempt to court a very sexy looking Reese Witherspoon in the new romantic comedy This Means War.

A Late ‘Safe House’ Movie Review

February 15th, 2012
safe-house

Denzel Washington has trained hard to become an unstoppable force. His not-so-secret secret: team with a younger white dude. Training Day, costarring a perennially pale Ethan Hawke, won him an Oscar, and Unstoppable , which also starred Chris Pine, showed he can be more than just a mid-ranged box office force. Denzel’s latest venture Safe House also stars Ryan Reynolds, and the results are explosive in more ways than one: it’s an instant hit – one of Denzel’s biggest debuts of his career – and an entertaining, fast-paced action movie.

Review: Chronicle Flies Sort of High This Weekend

February 3rd, 2012
chronicle

Three Seattle teenagers develop super powers and do wonderful things with them, like scaring little girls and playing practical jokes on unsuspecting strangers, in the entertaining but far from great sci-fi action film Chronicle. Oh, and one gets corrupted by his newfound powers and takes it out on the Emerald City and all those who stand in his way.

Taylor Lautner Puts the ‘Ab’ in Abduction

February 1st, 2012
abudction-taylor-lautner

Taylor Lautner alert! The perfect six pack is back, now under the tutelage of Oscar-nominated director John Singleton in Abduction, a cheesy action film that pits the lackluster actor against the CIA and other unsavory folk who are trying to kill him. Intended to be a post-Twilight franchise for Lautner and a box office comeback for Singleton, Abduction misses the mark.

Liam Neeson Plays a Badass in The Grey

January 27th, 2012
the-grey

I hate wolves. I’m going to make a movie about hating wolves. But I need a plot, so I’ll make Liam Neeson crash in Alaska and have to kill wolves to survive. Yeah. So appears to be the thought process that led to the new action-thriller The Grey, a “monster movie” thinly veiled as a dramatic and deep survival tale.

Better Late Than Never: Contraband Movie Review

January 23rd, 2012
contraband

If there’s one thing Marky Mark is good at these days, it’s being a badass. Whether playing an up-and-coming boxer or a military sniper, the former rapper knows how to throw a punch and look all-menacingly like. Even when his movies aren’t very good, you know you’re going to get an energetic, badass performance from the guy*. Takes Contraband, his latest movie. It’s routine and unremarkable, but Mark Wahlberg does what he does best: play a badass, and that’s enough.
