The 23 Movies to Watch this Summer

May 2nd, 2012
summer-movies-2012

Can you believe that summer is already here? We can’t! We’ve compiled a list of the best movies coming out this summer, based on buzz, trailers, promotion and pure gut instinct. Just keep in mind, if you do end up seeing all 23 movies on this list, you’ll have spent upwards of $230 at at the box office. Yikes!

No. 23. Rock of Ages

June 15, 2012 | Romance, Musical

A small-town girl meets a city boy on Sunset strip and in some deranged fantasy act out their love for another through hits by Def Leppard, Joan Jett, Poison and more, while Tom Cruise grows a mullet and rocks out like only a mulletted Tom Cruise could.

Why see it?
Having never seen the Broadway play, it’s hard to get too enthusiastic for this movie, but everyone who has says it’s a worthy spectacle. And love him or hate him, Tom Cruise generally picks his projects well, even when he only has a supporting role.

No. 22. The Chernobyl Diaries

May 25, 2012 | Horror

A group of young things decide to travel to Chernobyl for some "adventure tourism", but end up stranded in the radioactive site overnight – with some creepy dead Russians waiting to kill them.

Why see it?
There’s nothing to suggest that The Chernobyl Diaries is anything but a typical horror movie, except that it’s co-written by Oren Peli, the guy behind the ultra-scary Paranormal Activity franchise.

No. 21. The Loved Ones

June 2012 | Horror

A psychotic girl enlists her psychotic father to throw a torture-filled prom for her and her date-by-force.

Why see it?
It probably will be just another entry in the fading torture porn sub-genre, but The Loved Ones looks deliciously fucked up.

The Best Performances of 2011

February 25th, 2012
best-performances-2011

It’s true that the ultimate prize any actor can receive is an Academy Award. And yet, this year’s Oscars prove more than most that even the best performances can go overlooked. Seven of the top ten actors listed here were not nominated for an Academy Award, and only nine of the 20 actors who were nominated (for Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Actor in a Supporting Role and Best Actress in a Supporting Role) earned a place on this coveted list.

After all, FilmJabber’s list is coveted. Because we say it is, that’s why. Without further ado, here are the 20 best performances of 2011:

The 10 Most Disappointing Movies of 2011

January 9th, 2012
most-disappointing-movies-2011

Many critics and bloggers assemble top ten movie lists (like the best movies of 2011) this time of year. Many put together ‘worst of’ lists, too. I purposely avoided movies like Jack and Jill and Zookeeper this year, however. Those stinkers were clearly avoidable from the onset.

Unavoidable, however, were the movies I was really looking forward to. You know, the ones with awesome trailers and great potential. The ones that promise to be the next best thing. The movies that don’t live up to those lofty expectations. They may not be the worst movies of the year – in fact, some may be halfway decent – but they commit a greater sin: they break our hearts.

These are the ten most disappointing movies of 2011.

2011 was a terrible year for movies. Sure, there were some good ones, but there were very few great ones. 2012 has the potential to make up for it, as long as the world doesn’t end before the summer. Here are 25 upcoming movies that you should pay attention to in 2012.

The Top Ten Best Movies of 2011

January 2nd, 2012
top-ten-movies-2011

Frankly, 2011 was not a great year for movies. There were a lot of good movies, but few great movies. Spielberg released two movies, but neither were among his best. Scorsese made a kid’s movie, which, despite popular opinion, is not an Oscar-caliber film. The comic book adaptations were entertaining but not mind blowing. The various sequels lived up to their predecessors, but nothing more.

Still, there were a few that stood out from the rest. Few if any on this list were amazing, but they are the best that 2011 had to offer.

A lot of great movies were released this year – and a lot of bad ones, too – so for the average buyer, it’s tough to cut through the crap. Here is a list of ten movies to buy this holiday season that will make any movie lover happy:

It’s that special time of year. The air is getting colder. The weather is getting crappier. Families are coming together. Families are fighting. Families are eating big feasts. The 10 Best Johnny Depp Movies

October 27th, 2011
johnny-depp

Johnny Depp is one of the highest paid actors working today and has received three Oscar nominations among a variety of other accolades. Even though he’s starred in more bad movies in the last decade than he has good ones, his star has only grown brighter, aided by the hundreds of millions of dollars he’s earned from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Depp is a talented actor, one who is willing – or even determined – to take on strange characters in strange movies. With Johnny Depp’s latest [strange] movie The Rum Diary opening in theaters this week, it’s the perfect time to look back on his 10 best movies to determine why he’s as popular as he is.

rainy-day-movies

It’s raining in Los Angeles.  This is rare enough that every time it happens all my friends change their Facebook status and everyone forgets how to drive.  Which is annoying.  But you know what isn’t annoying?  Curling up on the couch and watching the perfect rainy day movie.  So, in the spirit of autumn weather reaching LA (however brief it may be) here are my top five rainy day girly films.

The Best Colin Farrell Movies of All Time

August 20th, 2011
colin-farrell-best-movies

For some reason, Colin Farrell has developed a love-him-or-hate-him reputation with audiences and critics. I for one find him to be one of the most talented actors working today, and have felt that way since he debuted in Tigerland over a decade ago. Farrell has proven to be a versatile actor who can and is willing to take on just about any juicy role, whether it’s playing a sleazy boss in Horrible Bosses or a love-smitten hit man in In Bruges.

Farrell is receiving strong reviews for his portrayal as an evil vampire in the horror-comedy remake Fright Night, so I figured it was about time to look back on the actor’s career.

The Best Superhero Movies of the 21st Century

June 3rd, 2011
best-superhero-movies

The X-Men return with a fury today, promising some great retro mutant action (I love me some retro mutant action). After two bad movies (X-Men 3 and X-Men Origins: Wolverine), X-Men: First Class is receiving rave reviews. X-Men: First Class currently has a 95% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s being called “a welcome return to form for the franchise.”

With several more superhero movies being released over the coming months – and countless more beyond that – we felt it was only right to review the best superhero movies of the 21st century. Needless to say, Elektra didn’t make the list.

Our criteria was simple – the movie has to feature a superhero, but doesn’t have to be based on a comic book. Vice versa, movies based on comic books but that don’t feature superheroes (like Ghost Town), don’t qualify. So, what the hell are you waiting for? Read on…

No. 11. Spider-Man (2002)

Following the success of X-Men two years earlier, Sony and Marvel unleashed hell upon the box office with the well-reviewed Sam Raimi movie Spider-Man. The movie is a bit dated – especially the graphics – and it’s a little too cheery for this day and age, but Spider-Man is still one of the best superhero movies of the 21st century.

No. 10. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)

Michael Cera is uberfied in the visual orgasm Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, a criminally overlooked action-comedy that is one of the most entertaining movies on this list. Some may argue he’s not a superhero, but he’s got super powers, defeats a super villain and gets a girl way out of his league. What’s not super about that?

The 10 Worst Johnny Depp Movies

May 19th, 2011
captain-jack-sparrow

Johnny Depp is often praised as one of the best actors working today. And he is. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t make a few stinkers here and there. In fact, as his popularity has risen the quality of his movies have decreased dramatically, primarily thanks to his unholy union with Tim Burton.

The Best Vin Diesel Movies of All Time

April 27th, 2011
vin-diesel

Fast Five races into theaters this Friday, promising more mindless, over-the-top action from the franchise that unfortunately keeps on giving.

Believe it or not, it’s been ten years since the Fast and Furious franchise launched Vin Diesel into stardom – and it’s the perfect time to talk a look back at the throaty bald actor. Despite being best known for doing action movies, many of his best films are in other genres.

Without further ado, here are the best movies of Vin Diesel’s career…

May is almost upon us, which means the summer movie season is almost upon us. Hundreds of millions of dollars will be spent driving audiences into the latest and biggest movie, whether it be Thor, X-Men, Transformers or Harry Potter. The 20 Best Performances of 2010

February 23rd, 2011
best-performances-of-2010

The 83rd Academy Awards are this weekend, which means by the end of Sunday four actors will have been chosen to be the best among the tens of thousands of players who performed in movies in 2010. But while a spattering of people here and there see the Oscars as the ultimate award show, we know better… there is no higher privilege than being selected by FilmJabber.

We might not have fancy awards shows or alcohol-and-drug-fueled after parties (I’m just saying that to steer the police off course!) or beautiful women in sexy dresses or Jack Nicholson, but FilmJabber’s list is just the best. Take our word for it.

Without further ado, here are the top 20 performances of 2010…
