The Three Stooges is Three Disasters in One

December 9th, 2011
three-stooges

It sounded like a bad idea from the beginning. Now there’s a movie trailer to prove it.

Bobby and Peter Farrelly (There’s Something About Mary, Dumb and Dumber) have directed The Three Stooges, a serious drama that puts Larry, Curly and Moe in modern day, armed with the same antics that made them so famous in the first place.

Is ‘The Help’ A Legitimate Oscar Contender?

December 6th, 2011
the-help-emma-stone

The Help. It’s about maids, black people, racism and a plain, ugly girl played by a beautiful actress. It’s a movie born and raised to be an Oscar contender, an accessible, lighthearted picture about a serious issue. It’s this year’s Blind Side, good-hearted and purposeful, harmless while entertaining. It’s also a box office hit, and Oscar voters love box office hits.

Mila Kunis, Sex, and a Friends With Benefits Movie Review

December 5th, 2011
friends-with-benefits

Sex. Mila Kunis. Sex. Body double nudity. We can pretend. Mila Kunis. Thankfully, Friends and Benefits is that and more. A self-aware romantic comedy that also stars Justin Timberlake, Friends and Benefits is a surprisingly entertaining movie that works more often than not, even though it falls victim to the one rule it doesn’t break: predictability.

Our Idiot Brother Movie Review

November 29th, 2011
our-idiot-brother

A pothead hippie idealist who was stupid enough to sell drugs to a uniformed police officer is released from jail and integrates not-so-seamlessly into the lives of his three sisters in Our Idiot Brother, a surprisingly thoughtful comedy that doesn’t stir up a lot of laughs but is genuinely enjoyable nonetheless.

The Descendants Movie Review

November 23rd, 2011

Alexander Payne’s last movie was 2004′s Oscar-winning dramedy Sideways, which means audiences should pay attention to his newest release The Descendants, an alluring and engaging drama that maneuvers the fine line between life’s sadness and humor.

Arthur Christmas Movie Review

November 23rd, 2011
arthur-christmas

It’s worth celebrating when Hollywood produces a Christmas movie that’s actually worth watching. There’s a reason why the most popular holiday movies are from yesteryear: it’s hard, apparently, to make a movie that sincerely captures the Christmas spirit. Over the last decade, Tim Allen and Vince Vaughn have combined to almost singlehandedly destroyed the genre, giving us such disasters as Santa Claus 3, Christmas with the Kranks, Fred Claus and Four Christmases. There hasn’t been a good holiday-themed movie since 2003′s Elf.

The Muppets Lives Up to the Hype

November 22nd, 2011
muppets-2011

“It’s time to play the music, it’s time to light the lights…”

I’m a child of the 80′s.  I grew up watching classic Disney, “Fraggle Rock”, and “The Muppets”.  So, needless to say, I was really excited to see The Muppets, their first theatrical release in over a decade.  And with all the positive hype it was getting, my hopes were set pretty high.  I was not disappointed.

TrollHunter Movie Review

November 16th, 2011
trollhunter

Trolls exist, and they are big, angry and smell like trolls. In the found-footage adventure tale TrollHunter, a group of college filmmakers investigating the mysterious deaths of several bears in Norway track down a bear hunter who is anything but a bear hunter. What ensues is a surprisingly slick, engaging and fun movie about friendship, love and dogs. Or about trolls.

Mirror Mirror Trailer Looks in the Mirror, Sees a Bad Movie

November 16th, 2011
snow-white-julia-roberts

The good news is that Mirror Mirror looks considerably different from its competitor Snow White and the Huntsman, to the degree that no one will confuse the two movies. The bad news is that the trailer pales in comparison in every possible way to the other movie’s trailer that debuted just last week.

Attack the Block Movie Review

November 14th, 2011
attack-the-block

When aliens attack, they better not land in inner city South London. That’s the message in Attack the Block, the entertaining but inconsequential action-comedy about a bunch of pitch-black aliens with glowing razor-sharp teeth who meet their match in a group of ragtag hoodlums.

Puss in Boots Holds Off Tower Heist, Harold and Kumar

November 6th, 2011
puss-in-boots

The box office battle for first place… really wasn’t much of a battle. After a disappointing $34 million debut for DreamWorks’ Puss in Boots last week – which was at least partially attributed to opening the movie on Halloween weekend – the Antonio Banderas-starring family film bounced back in a big way, earning $33 million from 259 fewer theaters. The cute-but-dangerous cat dropped only 3% from last weekend, bringing its overall total to a more respectable $75 million, based on estimates.

Occupy This: Tower Heist Movie Review

November 4th, 2011
tower-heist-ben-stiller

What do you get when you let a director known for adequately average films and two comedians who haven’t starred in a good movie in years attempt to convince people to spend their hard-earned cash on a movie about people losing their hard-earned cash? A surprisingly convincing crime-comedy called Tower Heist, which, strangely, isn’t very funny.

The title may be A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas, but the second sequel to the cult classic rides into theaters on November 4, 2011 – just a couple of weeks away.
