June 24th, 2011
horrible-bosses

Have you ever had a horrible boss? Do you have one now? I’m sure you haven’t. They only exist in the movies. Right?

Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis star in the upcoming comedy Horrible Bosses, which debuts in theaters on July 8, 2011. The three star as miserable men working for – you guessed it – horrible bosses, who, while on a drunken stupor, decide to kill their bosses.

Exclusive New Terri Movie Photos

June 23rd, 2011
terri-john-c-reilly

John C. Reilly is one of my favorite actors. Thankfully, I’m pleased to present a small handful of new movie stills from his upcoming movie Terri - which debuts in select theaters on July 1, 2011.

A hit at the Sundance 2011 Film Festival, “Terri” is a drama-comedy about the relationship between Terri (Jacob Wysocki), an oversized teen misfit, and the garrulous but well-meaning vice principal (John C. Reilly) who takes an interest in him.

L’illusionniste: Not The Triplets of Belleville

June 22nd, 2011
illusionist-2010

An aging French illusionist finds his prospects dwindling as rock bands and electronics go mainstream in the Oscar-nominated French animated film L’illusionniste – known to us non-Frenchmen as The Illusionist. The movie is an alluring and richly animated drama-comedy, but its low key storytelling fails to hold attention the way the filmmaker’s last production, the incredible Triplets of Belleville, did.

Cedar Rapids Movie Review

June 21st, 2011
cedar-rapids-john-reilly

Between the two Hangover movies, star Ed Helms took a solo stab at comedy with the early 2011 release Cedar Rapids, a movie about a naively innocent insurance salesman who travels out of state for the first time to an insurance seminar, where he gets himself into a variety of absurd situations. Cedar Rapids is a mildly amusing comedy that never quite finds its footing.

Salvation Boulevard Movie Review

June 13th, 2011
salvation-boulevard

Of all the movies I watched at the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF) this year, none was more rewarding than Salvation Boulevard, the agnostic comedy starring Greg Kinnear, Pierce Brsonan, Marisa Tomei, Jennifer Connelly and Ed Harris. A lighthearted, offbeat laugh fest, the movie wasn’t as awarding as the experience, that of being crammed into a theater full of atheists who relate all too well to the jokes on display.

MegaMind Movie Review

June 9th, 2011
megamind

The second animated film of 2010 to feature a goofy super villain as the protagonist, Megamind‘s fall release appeared to be too little, too late, despite starring the voices of Will Ferrell, Tina Fey and Brad Pitt. Thankfully, the DreamWorks Animation comedy is significantly different than Despicable Me, much closer to The Incredibles in tone and delivery.

SIFF Reviews: The Hunter, Mammuth, Tornado Alley

June 8th, 2011
mammuth

My experience at the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF) has been pretty hit-or-miss, though it’s trending in the right direction. Of the five movies I’ve seen thus far, the first three were wastes of time, so much so that they’ve marred my entire experience.

No Strings Attached, No Thank You

June 2nd, 2011

Natalie Portman. Friend with benefits. Yes, please. Ashton Kutcher, same arrangement. I’ll pass. The same goes for No Strings Attached, a harmless but utterly forgettable romantic comedy starring the Oscar winner and winning replacement for Charlie Sheen.

Super Movie Review: Surprisingly Sadistic

June 2nd, 2011
super-ellen-page

In Super, the unbelievable happens: Dwight Schrute becomes a badass. After his wife is taken by a group of drug dealing gangsters, a God-fearing man named Frank (Rainn Wilson) dons the alter ego of the Crimson Bolt to take down crime once and for all. He joins forces with sidekick Bolty, played by a spandex-clad Ellen Page.

The Hangover Part II Movie Review

May 28th, 2011
hangover-2-poster

To start off this movie review in the same way that countless others have, the wolfpack is back in The Hangover Part II! This go-around, Phil, Stu and Alan wake up in Bangkok, shaved, tattooed and missing Stu’s soon-to-be brother-in-law. The expected hijinks ensue – and by “expected” I mean exactly the same – but The Hangover Part II is still an entertaining, albeit not nearly as funny follow-up to the hit comedy.

Kung Fu Panda 2 Movie Review

May 26th, 2011
kung-fu-panda-2

It took me a long time to finally come around to seeing the first Kung Fu Panda.  Not sure what my hesitation was, but when I finally saw the film I was pleasantly surprised.  The first film sported beautiful animation, great voice performances and an animated script that actually made me laugh.

Pirates of the Caribbean 4 Movie Review

May 22nd, 2011
on-stranger-tides

If a tree falls in a forest and no one’s around, does it make a sound? If Captain Jack Sparrow returns in a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie, does anyone care? And most importantly, with most of the original cast gone and a new director, is it any good? The answer to the latter is ‘not very’, as Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides looks nice but lacks the energy of the previous entries.

The 10 Worst Johnny Depp Movies

May 19th, 2011
captain-jack-sparrow

Johnny Depp is often praised as one of the best actors working today. And he is. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t make a few stinkers here and there. In fact, as his popularity has risen the quality of his movies have decreased dramatically, primarily thanks to his unholy union with Tim Burton.

Bridesmaids: The Funniest Movie of 2011?

May 15th, 2011
bridesmaids-kristen-wiig

Why should men have all the fun? Featuring an almost entirely female cast, Bridesmaids does what few comedies have done before: it delivers a story both about and for women, but with all the R-rated, raunchy and hilarious jokes typically seen in guy’s films. Bridesmaids is the funniest movie of the year.
