Review: The Do-Deca-Pentathlon

November 1st, 2012
do-deca-pentathlon

From the Duplass brothers come their latest drama-comedy, a small picture called The Do-Deca-Pentathlon that was somehow filmed over just a couple of days. Starring Mark Kelly and Steve Zissis, the movie is about two brothers who attempt to bridge their broken relationship by resurrecting a 25-round competition – the same competition that divided them years earlier.

Review: ‘The Campaign’ Punches a Baby

October 30th, 2012
the-campaign

Politicians are idiots. I’m old enough to acknowledge that a majority of elected officials are not nearly smart enough to be responsible for making decisions we afford them. Unfortunately, we’re stuck with them, because the smart people go into other lines of work. In The Campaign, comedic heavyweight and incumbent Will Ferrell and up-and-coming-and-almost-here Zach Galifianakis, who can be called that because I can now spell his name without Googling him, square off as rival politicians. Both play idiots as the two actors are wont to do, but unfortunately the movie is not a sum of its parts.

Review: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

October 29th, 2012
best-exotic-marigold-hotel

British people are funny. Especially old British people. And especially old British people taken out of their comfort zone and inserted into one of the most hectic countries in the world: India. In The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy, Penelope Wilton, Maggie Smith and Dev Patel star in the surprisingly heartwarming tale about a group of retirees who find themselves in a less-than-luxurious but oddly charming hotel.

The Giant Mechanical Man Movie Review

October 11th, 2012
giant-mechanical-man

If you like Pam from “The Office” – or at least pre-marriage Pam from the early seasons – then you’ll enjoy The Giant Mechanical Man, a sweet and offbeat romantic comedy starring Jenna Fischer that has gone largely overlooked by mainstream audiences.

Review: ‘The Intouchables’ Gets a Rare A+ Review

October 7th, 2012
intouchables

There’s a serious problem with American audiences. Most do not like foreign films. Subtitles. People who speak other languages. No special effects. It’s a serious problem because films like The Intouchables (Intouchables) go largely overlooked in the States, despite the movie being an international box office hit (nearly $400 million and counting) and one of the best movies of the 21st century.

New Lone Ranger Trailer, Poster and Photos, Oh My!

October 4th, 2012
lone-ranger-poster

Last time you saw Gore Verbinski and Johnny Depp team up, the result was a quiet franchise known as Pirates of the Caribbean. Actually, it was the stellar animated movie Rango. Their latest unholy union is The Lone Ranger, a super-expensive and problem-laden western adventure flick that may or may not involve werewolves and other supernatural creatures.

Arachnophobia Blu-Ray Offers 7 Minutes of Bonus Features

October 1st, 2012
arachnophobia

A vintage 1990′s classic made its Blu-ray debut last week. Disney said, “so what?”

Arachnophobia is the best spider movie of all time, and it still stands the test of time. Yes, it’s a bit goofy, a bit cheesy, but even still it makes you want to check that popcorn before you stick your hand in the bowl and the shower faucet in the morning. As silly as it is – John Goodman plays a wisecracking exterminator – the movie lives up to its name.

September 28th, 2012

As the fall movie season picks up, a film that is likely to go overlooked is quietly expanding: The Perks of Being a Wallflower, an entertaining and well made drama-comedy starring Logan Lerman, Ezra Miller and Emma Watson.

The Five Best Nora Ephron Movies

September 24th, 2012
nora-ephron-when-harry-met-sally

Let’s face it: The state of the modern Hollywood romantic comedy is abysmal.  Sure, there have been a couple of diamonds in the rough here and there; Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Punch-Drunk Love come to mind.  The bad news is that I had to reach all the way back to 2004 and 2002 for examples.  For many, including myself, it feels like Hollywood is making the same movie over and over again, laden with clichés and a cast liable to include Katherine Heigl or Kate Hudson.

Review: Eastwood has ‘Trouble with the Curve’

September 21st, 2012
trouble-with-the-curve

Between his send-off in Gran Torino and conversations with empty chairs, Clint Eastwood’s time in front of the camera appeared to be a thing of the past. But then the revered actor received another offer to play a crabby old man, and it was an offer he couldn’t refuse.

‘Cabin in the Woods’ is on DVD. Watch it Now.

September 18th, 2012
cabin-in-the-woods-girl

One of the best movies of 2012 debuts on DVD and Blu-ray this week, and that movie is Cabin in the Woods. What looks like a stereotypical horror movie about a group of young stupid things who go to – you guessed it – a cabin in the woods only to get dismembered one by one is anything but, but to say anything more than that would ruin what makes it so good in the first place.

Eva Mendes is a ‘Girl in Progress’, Now on DVD

September 11th, 2012
girl-in-progress

Eva Mendes stars in the drama-comedy Girl in Progress, now available on DVD and Blu-ray. In the movie, Mendes plays a single mom trying to juggle her job, bills and an affair with a married man… her daughter is of lower priority. Girl in Progress is a film that has a lot of positive elements, but that never hits its stride.  It’s a film I wanted to like more than I did…
