Movie Review: Girl In Progress, Not All the Way There

May 11th, 2012
girl-in-progress

Girl in Progress is a film that has a lot of positive elements, but that never hits its stride.  It’s a film I wanted to like more than I did.

First the positives – Eva Mendes (Grace) looks beautiful as always.  Girl in Progress also features a promising up-and-comer in Cierra Ramirez, who plays Grace’s angsty daughter Ansiedad.  Quality supporting performances from Matthew Modine and Patricia Arquette help bring some maturity and gravitas to the story (a la Richard Jenkins in Friends With Benefits).  And at its core, Girl in Progress most importantly has a good heart, or at the least good intentions.

Now some of the negatives… Read our full Girl in Progress movie review.

The Five-Year Engagement Movie Review

April 29th, 2012
five-year-engagement-segel-blunt

A man and a woman meet, fall in love, get engaged. The next step is obvious. Obvious, but not easy. Between career opportunities and unexpected family situations, the initiation process to their next stage in life – the wedding – keeps getting pushed back, a victim of life’s little ironies and twists. The Five-Year Engagement looks at the ups and downs of their relationship, capturing the funny moments along the way. Unfortunately, the movie also feels like it is five years long.

New to Netflix: The Sitter Movie Review

April 26th, 2012
the-sitter

Ah, babysitter movies. Pillow fights, sexy vixens in underwear and crazy adventures. Or Jonah Hill. And not even post-weight-loss Jonah Hill either. Very disappointing. In the new ridiculously unfunny The Sitter, Hill plays Noah, a college student who does nothing but hang out at his mother’s house. He is talked into babysitting three children for the evening, but what should be a simple night turns into something much more as he sets out to buy drugs for his girlfriend so she’ll have sex with him. The things we do for love. Or sex. Or entertaining an audience.

The Top 5 Worst Movie Trailers of 2012 (So Far)

April 19th, 2012
worst-movie-trailers

It may be early in the year to be making a list like this, but we are only 1/4 of the way through 2012 and most of the previews I have seen for summer blockbusters have been lame to say the least. Lets take a look at this year’s worst movie trailers so far:

The Cabin in the Woods is Bloody Awesome

April 15th, 2012
cabin-in-the-woods-girl

Five horny college students go to a cabin in the woods. You know what happens next. Or not. A perfect example of don’t judge a book by its cover, or a movie by its trailer, The Cabin in the Woods is one of the most entertaining, strange, absurdly awesome horror movies to hit theaters in the history of cinema. It has its scares, but it’s also hilarious, and most importantly, it is completely unpredictable in all the right ways.

The Three Stooges: As Unfunny As They Come

April 13th, 2012
three-stooges-lobster

When you’ve come to the conclusion that you should walk out on a movie approximately 76 seconds after the opening credits, you know you’re in for a world of hurt. The Three Stooges does a great job of capturing the humor and giddiness of the three classic characters. Unfortunately, their humor has been obsolete for 80 years.

Jack and Jill Is Not the Worst Movie Ever

April 12th, 2012
jack-and-jill

Move over The Artist. The biggest awards show winner was not that critically praised silent movie. It wasn’t Hugo, and it wasn’t The Descendants. No, winner of 11 honorable awards including Worst Actor, Worst Actress, Worst Director, Worst Ensemble, Worst Remake, Worst Screen Couple, Worst Screen Ensemble, Worst Screenplay, Worst Supporting Actor, Worst Supporting Actress and, most importantly, Worst Picture, is Jack and Jill, a movie that stars Adam Sandler as both title characters.

21 Jump Street Movie Review

April 11th, 2012
21-jump-street

Just when you think Channing Tatum’s career is on the downturn, he cranks out 21 Jump Street, a critical and financial hit that ensures the sometimes-cardboard actor has a franchise on his hands. And don’t forget Jonah Hill, who, hot off his Oscar-nominated performance in Moneyball, co-stars in this funny if sometimes obnoxious action-comedy.

Another Slice of American Pie: American Reunion

April 6th, 2012
american-reunion

If apple pies could run, they would run for cover, because Jim is back for more awkward sexual antics in American Reunion, the long-awaited third theatrical sequel to American Pie no one asked for. Jason Biggs, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nicholas and Eddie Kaye Thomas have all returned to show just how little their careers have progressed since the 1999 classic. Despite being a blatant cash grab and by no means a comedy classic, American Reunion has enough laughs and goofy antics to make it worth a trip into the land of nostalgia.

Watch the New ‘Ted’ Trailer. Or Don’t.

April 5th, 2012
ted-movie

Universal Pictures has released a new trailer for the upcoming Seth MacFarlane comedy Ted, which stars Mark Wahlberg as a man who has a talking teddy bear as a best friend. Mila Kunis plays his girlfriend, and she wants the crude, prostitute-loving bear out of the house, and understandably so. He’s obnoxious and not very funny, much like the movie trailer

Mirror Mirror Review: Wait for the Other Snow White

March 30th, 2012
mirror-mirror-lily-collins-dwarves

Hooray!  Finally the Snow White adaptation that we’ve all been excited for has arrived. Slick visuals, Chris Hemsworth and Kristen Stewart look great….oh wait – that’s Snow White and the Huntsman, which comes out this summer.  Instead, this is the Relativity version that had been jockeying for release schedule supremacy with its counterpart to ensure it reached audiences first.  There’s a reason for that.

Hop Better than Chipmunks, But That’s Not Saying Much

March 26th, 2012
hop-movie

After nearly a year since it came to theaters, the Easter-themed movie Hop bounded its way onto DVD last week, understandably timed to take advantage of the religious holiday once again. An animated/live-action blend, Hop is more tolerable than other recent films in the sub-genre, though comparing the movie to the likes of Garfield and Alvin and the Chipmunks doesn’t say a whole lot. In other words, the movie will entertain very young kids and not insult parents, but is no comedy classic.
