March 25th, 2012
boy-movie

From the director of the quirky but flawed Eagle Vs. Shark comes another quirky but flawed drama-comedy called Boy, about a boy named Boy who is excited to see that his absent father has returned – and then less excited when he realizes his dad is an incompetent hoodlum.

The Kid with a Bike Movie Review

March 18th, 2012
kid-with-a-bike

The Kid with a Bike marks the third Dardenne brothers film I’ve had the pleasure of seeing after Lorna’s Silence and the incredible L’enfant.  While not as emotionally hard hitting as that film, The Kid with a Bike is a simple tale filled with a very complex moral landscape.

Will Ferrell is Mexican in Casa de mi Padre

March 16th, 2012
casa-de-mi-padre

Will Ferrell is back, and he’s speaking español. In Casa de mi Padre, Ferrell plays a dumb yet idealistic Mexican rancher named Armando whose beliefs are challenged when he encounters his brother’s beautiful fiancé (Genesis Rodriguez) and discovers that his brother (Diego Luna) is a drug dealer who is gearing up to go to war with rival La Onza (played by Luna’s Y Tu Mama Tambien costar Gael Garcia Bernal). As is evident from the plot and the lead actor, Casa de mi Padre is stupid and funny at the same time. ¡Ay ay ay!

A wrong call. A random stranger named Kevin. A broken door frame. These are the circumstances that set a slacker on his journey to fulfill his destiny in Jeff, Who Lives at Home, the funny new comedy from Jay and Mark Duplass.

sin-city-2

Is the long rumored but never realized Sin City 2 finally coming to theaters?
According to an article at MovieWeb, which doesn’t reference a source, director Robert Rodriguez will film the sequel to the absurdly over-the-top action-comedy Machete – naturally titled Machete Kills – this April, for a 2013 release.

Johnny Depp as Tonto Is All Kinds of Wrong

March 10th, 2012
lone-ranger-johnny-depp-tonto

Walt Disney Pictures has released the first still image from the upcoming movie The Lone Ranger, to be directed by Gore Verbinski and starring his Pirates of the Caribbean caricature Johnny Depp… not as the title character, but as his Native American sidekick Tonto. The movie sounded like a disaster from day one: a bloated $200+ million budget, a script filled with werewolves and other CGI monsters and, frankly, the casting of megastar Depp as the sidekick.

Men in Black 3 Trailer Says It’s Time to End this Franchise

March 6th, 2012
men-in-black-3

I loved the first Men in Black movie. Its sequel, the intelligently titled Men in Black 2, was mediocre at best, but still entertaining at times. Now, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are back for another dose of J and K, but I have a feeling I’ll be less interested in the film’s time travel storyline and more interested in checking my watch to see how much longer remains before I can leave the theater and do something more entertaining.

Project X Movie Review

March 2nd, 2012
project-x

High school. The new movie Project X captures it perfectly. Well, high school parties at least. These were common affairs for me, at least once a week. If not more. Thousands of teenagers. Naked women. Sex. Drugs. Alcohol. Riots in the street. Flamethrowers. Mass destruction.

Tim & Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie Review

March 1st, 2012
tim-and-erics-billion-dollar-movie

I got invited to a free press screening to Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie, but it was during the workday. The thought of leaving work and going to watch this idiotic-looking movie was too much to bear. So, instead, I spent $10 to watch it On Demand. That is ten dollars and an hour and a half I will never, ever get back.

Wanderlust is Actually, Sort of, Really Funny

February 24th, 2012
wanderlust

Jennifer Aniston. Malin Akerman. And an open sex environment. Paul Rudd, what have you gotten yourself into? From the director of Wet Hot American Summer comes a more polished version of Wet Hot American Summer, a hippie-themed romp of comedy bits that work more than not. The title is Wanderlust, another Judd Apatow-produced laugh fest.

Johnny Depp, Amber Heard and The Rum Diary

February 23rd, 2012
rum-diary

Last time Johnny Depp took on a Hunter S. Thompson adaptation, he was Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. In The Rum Diary, he’s simply lost in Puerto Rico, which isn’t nearly as wild of a ride. At times entertaining, but generally forgettable, The Rum Diary‘s only saving grace is that it also stars the face and body of Amber Heard.

This Means War Movie Review

February 17th, 2012
this-means-war

It’s the decision every man faces in life: do you bug the home of the woman you’re dating? Even more common: do you or do you not spy on the woman while she’s going on a date with your best friend and coworker, using a Predator Drone aircraft? These are the quandaries on-screen pals Chris Pine and Tom Hardy face as they both attempt to court a very sexy looking Reese Witherspoon in the new romantic comedy This Means War.
