Joe Johnston, move over. Chris Evans, throw down your shield. The 90′s badass version of Captain America has returned, the red, white and blue invading DVD players for the first time. If you liked this summer’s big budget blockbuster, you’ll love the 1990/1992 version, a superbly written, highly entertaining and expertly crafted action film starring big names like Matt Salinger, Kim Gillingham and Scott Paulin as the Red Skull.

When it comes to quantity, the theatrical division of Marvel Comics, a subsidiary of the Walt Disney Company, owned this summer. With Thor, X-Men: First Class and Captain America: The First Avenger all looking to jump-start new or rebooted franchises, Marvel had just about every month of summer covered.

Anne Hathaway. Black tights. The BatPod. It’s Friday and it’s a good day.

Warner Bros. has released the first official photo of Anne Hathaway dressed up as Catwoman, wearing all black and driving the BatPod. Interestingly enough she’s also wearing some trippy looking goggles.

Superman’s Costume Revealed

August 4th, 2011
superman-2013

Despite not debuting until 2013, the first official photo from the upcoming Zack Snyder Superman rebootMan of Steel – has appeared online. Fanboy reaction has been mixed, but I don’t see what’s not too like. Sure, the scaly costume is a bit odd, but the muted, deeper colors were a much needed improvement. The cape could well be CGI, but who really cares? Noticeably hidden by shadow is Superman’s nether-region, which could or could not include the red tights.

July 23rd, 2011
captain-america

The comic book adaptations have come fast and furiously this summer, yet none have established themselves among the genre’s best. Captain America: The First Avenger is the final 2011 entry, and like the other Marvel films, it’s entertaining but not much more.

By now, everyone, their mother and Osama bin Laden (can’t make that crack anymore) has seen the teaser trailer for The Dark Knight Rises, judging by the hundreds of millions of dollars Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 earned over the weekend. Oh, and the fact that it’s Tuesday and the trailer for the new Batman movie was released Monday morning.

New Captain America Trailer and Poster

June 24th, 2011
captain-america

Is anyone else looking forward to Captain America: The First Avenger? After Thor, which was good but merely a prelude to something bigger, X-Men: First Class, which was okay but a little disappointing, and Green Lantern, which was… well, it is what it is… Captain America is this year’s last opportunity to deliver a blow-your-socks-off superhero story.

Green Lantern Movie Review

June 18th, 2011
green-lantern

Warner Brothers and DC Comics seek to launch a new franchise this weekend in the form of Green Lantern, a special-effects extravaganza starring Ryan Reynolds. Boasting a staggering production and marketing budget of $300 million, the movie is an aggressive and risky move for the new DC Comics film division.

X-Men: First Class Movie Review

June 7th, 2011
xmen-first-class

After a disappointing sequel and a miserable prequel, the X-Men franchise returns to the big screen with a new cast, a new time period and a new look. From director Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass), X-Men: First Class is an edgy reboot that entertains but fails to live up to expectations set by its predecessors.

The Best Superhero Movies of the 21st Century

The X-Men return with a fury today, promising some great retro mutant action (I love me some retro mutant action). After two bad movies (X-Men 3 and X-Men Origins: Wolverine), X-Men: First Class is receiving rave reviews. X-Men: First Class currently has a 95% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s being called “a welcome return to form for the franchise.”

Thor: The Movie Review

May 7th, 2011
thor

Testosterone and thunder collide with the release of Thor, the first official blockbuster of the summer movie season and a precursor to next year’s The Avengers. The movie, curiously helmed by Shakespearean director Kenneth Branagh, is an entertaining start to the season but unfortunately not the knock-your-socks action extravaganza you may be expecting.

For those of you who were skeptical about Seth Rogen as superhero The Green Hornet, now’s your chance. The movie is now available on DVD and Blu-Ray, which means you can buy it or rent it or watch it and love it forever. Or at least for two hours, which is how long the movie is.

The Incredibles Looks Incredible on Blu-Ray

April 18th, 2011
the-incredibles-blu-ray

In the dawning age of Blu-Ray and high definition, one studio that benefits more than most is Disney-Pixar. Not only do their Blu-Ray releases give us an excuse to relive the great movies they’ve produced over the last two decades, but Pixar films look absolutely great in high definition. The Incredibles, recently released to Blu-Ray, is no different.

Captain America Avenges with First Trailer

March 23rd, 2011
captain-america

The first trailer for Captain America: The First Avenger is now online. For the first time, we get to see a teeny tiny, scrawny, pathetic version of Chris Evans – and lots of shooting and explosions. The trailer doesn’t blow me away, but it’s more or less solid.
