Review: Jack Black Overachieves in ‘Bernie’

November 7th, 2012
bernie-jack-black

Jack Black turns in the best performance of his career in Bernie, where he plays a friendly, possibly gay mortician who befriends a cranky old woman but then, with a momentary burst of insanity, shoots her dead. Funny, interesting and based on a true story, Bernie is a welcome surprise.

Review: ‘Pusher’ is Fast-Paced and Colorful, But…

October 25th, 2012
pusher

Last year, Drive was my favorite film. Naturally, Hollywood decided to remake the 1996 Danish flick that put director Nicolas Winding Refn on the map: Pusher. Fast-paced, colorful and loud, this new Pusher is an adequately entertaining crime thriller, but also one that is largely forgettable.

Review: ‘The Paperboy’ Will Shove a Camera in Your Crotch

October 11th, 2012
paperboy-nicole-kidman

From the director of the oppressive Oscar-winning film Precious comes another in-your-face and disturbing drama called The Paperboy, a 1960′s era drama-thriller-romance-something that is wholly unpredictable, though not necessarily for the better.

Review: ‘A Cat in Paris’ is Worth Nine Lives

October 9th, 2012
cat-in-paris

A cat burglar steals a necklace and a cat puts the police on his trail in the entertaining and imaginative cartoon A Cat in Paris, an Oscar-nominated animated thriller that defies expectations and pleases on all the right levels. With a running time of only 62 minutes, it’s also an extremely quick watch.

Watch the Thriller ‘Headhunters’ This Week

September 4th, 2012
headhunters-movie

This time of year sucks for movies. The films being released to theaters suck, and most of the movies coming out to DVD suck. But there was one film that was released on DVD last week that you probably didn’t pay much attention to. Why? Because you haven’t heard of it. Why? Because it’s a foreign film.

Review: The Summer Ends with ‘Lawless’

August 29th, 2012
lawless-movie

The late summer doldrums end with a bang as Lawless rolls into theaters, a dramatized true story of moonshining brothers who are pitted against a ruthless police officer. Despite featuring great performances and a violent story, however, Lawless fails to be the sum of its part.

The 9 Best Joseph Gordon-Levitt Movies

August 24th, 2012
joseph-gordon-levitt

Ever since his career-making turn in 1999′s 10 Things I Hate About You, Joseph Gordon-Levitt has proven he has an eye for choosing rewarding, versatile projects (we’ll ignore G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra). Joseph Gordon-Levitt is one of the most talented actors working today, and while he has yet to earn an Academy Award nomination, it’s only a matter of time.

With The Dark Knight Rises still plugging along and the Gordon-Levitt-starring Premium Rush in theaters this week, now is a perfect time to look at the accomplished actor’s best movies.

Nicolas Cage Steals Another Movie in ‘Stolen’

August 20th, 2012
stolen-nicolas-cage

Last time Nicolas Cage and director Simon West joined forces, the absurdly entertaining Con-Air was the result. Oh, times have changed. Fifteen years later, the action genre has evolved, Nicolas Cage’s career has devolved and their collaboration is being released to limited theaters – a troubling trend for the once popular actor.

Oliver Stone Returns to Form with ‘Savages’

July 6th, 2012
savages-blake-lively

Look at Oliver Stone’s career from one side and you see a string of celebrated classics. Platoon. Wall Street. Born on the Fourth of July. The Doors. JFK. Natural Born Killers. Impressive. Look at his 21st century career, however, and it paints a different picture. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. W. World Trade Center. Alexander. A couple mediocre films. A few disasters.

Six New Blu-ray Releases You Should Own

July 5th, 2012
cocktail-ransom-bullhead

I typically try to write reviews for every individual Blu-ray I receive in the mail (well, the good ones), but after a crazy hectic June I came home late last week to find a stack of great movies sitting on my doorstep. All were released in the last few weeks, but the thought of tackling all of them was overwhelming. I won’t write about movies just because I receive them, but these six warrant attention:

“Who you’re killing next? Do you take requests? Because I was thinking maybe some Kardashians, my gym coach. People who give high fives. Really, any jock. Twihards. People who talk about punk rock.”

Sister Act/Sister Act 2 Blu-ray Review

July 2nd, 2012
sister-act

Wow, do I feel old. It’s been 20 years since Sister Act debuted, and just about that long since Whoopi Goldberg was relevant. A sequel and Broadway play later, Sister Act and Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit have been re-released in a double Blu-ray package.

Sherlock Holmes 2 Blu-ray: Why So Complicated?

June 13th, 2012
sherlock-holmes-robert-downey-jr

As studios scramble to appeal to the digital download fans while still clinging to the lucrative-but-quickly-fading home video model, we get awkward releases such as the Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows Blu-ray combo pack, which comes with a Blu-ray disc (of course), a DVD and something called Ultraviolet (“your movies in the cloud!”).
