Better Late Than Never: Contraband Movie Review

January 23rd, 2012
contraband

If there’s one thing Marky Mark is good at these days, it’s being a badass. Whether playing an up-and-coming boxer or a military sniper, the former rapper knows how to throw a punch and look all-menacingly like. Even when his movies aren’t very good, you know you’re going to get an energetic, badass performance from the guy*. Takes Contraband, his latest movie. It’s routine and unremarkable, but Mark Wahlberg does what he does best: play a badass, and that’s enough.

Rampart Movie Review

January 16th, 2012
rampart

Corrupt cops should know better than to beat a suspect to a pulp in the YouTube age. From the director of the excellent drama The Messenger, Woody Harrelson stars as an LA police officer who gets caught red handed – you guessed it – beating a suspect to a pulp in Rampart, a movie with a lot going for it. Not so much to show for it.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Movie Review

December 30th, 2011
girl-with-the-dragon-tattoo-2011

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, not to be confused with the 2009 movie The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, based on the same book only in a different language, is now in theaters, and while at first glance the necessity of an English-language remake appears questionable, director David Fincher establishes early on why audiences should care: his version is simply better.

Point Blank Movie Review

December 29th, 2011
point-blank-movie

Pregnant wife, check. Upcoming promotion, check. Corrupt, murderous cops who’ve kidnapped said wife and future mother? Check. The French thriller À bout portant (Point Blank) is a fast-paced thriller that races from one action sequence to the next but fails to capitalize on its twists and turns.

The world’s greatest detective battles the world’s most devious villain in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, a flashy, fast-paced action-comedy that never reaches its potential but delivers plenty of entertainment nonetheless.

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law return as the bickering friends and partners Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.

Dominic Cooper Kills in The Devil’s Double

November 22nd, 2011
devils-double

Playing double often doesn’t work out well. Ask Adam Sandler. Then again, on rare occasion, it works splendidly. In The Devil’s Double, Dominic Cooper turns in an incredible performance as Uday Hussein, the sadistic son of Saddam Hussein, and his reluctant body double Latif Yahia.

Occupy This: Tower Heist Movie Review

November 4th, 2011
tower-heist-ben-stiller

What do you get when you let a director known for adequately average films and two comedians who haven’t starred in a good movie in years attempt to convince people to spend their hard-earned cash on a movie about people losing their hard-earned cash? A surprisingly convincing crime-comedy called Tower Heist, which, strangely, isn’t very funny.

The Son of No One Movie Review

November 3rd, 2011
son-of-no-one-channing-tatum

Another cop drama, another Channing Tatum movie. Another film where Al Pacino wastes his talent. It’s The Son of No One, a movie that no one needs to watch. The very definition of mediocre, The Son of No One is neither offensive nor captivating. It’s a movie that exists simply to exist, to offer nothing of substance while still eating up an hour and a half of viewers’ time.

New The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Trailer

September 25th, 2011
girl-with-the-dragon-tattoo

OK, so it’s not that new in respect to entertainment news. It was released several days ago, but since I have other things on my mind than posting movie trailers, I’m just getting to it now.

The first full-length trailer – and at nearly four minutes, it’s a long one – for the David Fincher version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – is now online. It shows quite a lot of the movie, but is edited in a way that doesn’t entirely ruin the plot for people who haven’t read the books – or who haven’t seen the original movies.

Tripping on the Trainspotting Blu-Ray

September 18th, 2011
trainspotting

Long before Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours, Danny Boyle introduced both himself and Ewan McGregor to American audiences with Trainspotting, still considered one of the best drug-themed dramas ever made. The movie was neither Boyle’s nor McGregor’s first movie, but it was their first to make a real impact across the pond, thanks to Boyle’s frenetic direction, McGregor’s lively performance and a dead baby crawling on a ceiling.
