Review: Dustin Hoffman Directs a ‘Quartet’

June 18th, 2013
quartet-dustin-hoffman

Cocoon has been remade, but the aliens have been replaced with opera music. Quartet is a movie about a retirement home for aging musicians, where four old fogies of varying physical and mental capabilities reunite for one final performance. Funny if ultimately insignificant, Quartet is a worthy directorial debut for Dustin Hoffman.

Review: Aliens Are In Your Head in ‘Dark Skies’

June 8th, 2013
dark-skies-movie

Aliens are in your head, at least according to the latest alien abduction flick Dark Skies, which promotes itself as being from the producer of Paranormal Activity and Insidious in a desperate attempt to hide the fact the movie is actually from the director of Priest and Legion. Despite feeling all too familiar at times, Dark Skies holds its own – at least until its terribly abrupt and unsatisfying ending.

Review: ‘Identity Thief’ Will Steal Your Happiness

June 3rd, 2013
identity-thief

She stole his identity, Identity Thief stole my happiness. Like a sponge where water is joy, like a Dementor at a soul buffet, like a prism that only bends darkness, Identity Thief pairs two comedic naturals and proceeds to stalk your laughter, lashing out with brutality every time you think you may want to laugh. Which isn’t often.

Review: Is ‘Parker’ Like Every Other Jason Statham Movie?

May 21st, 2013
parker-jason-statham

Jason Statham is back in the latest Jason Statham movie, where he plays Jason Statham doing Jason Statham things. The name of the game is Parker and it serves as the actor’s best film in years, but ultimately it feels like just another – sorry to sound repetitive – Jason Statham movie.

Review: Texas Chainsaw Hits DVD, Causes Mind Pain

May 14th, 2013
texas-chainsaw-3d

Leatherface is back, and oh boy. Texas Chainsaw 3D is the worst kind of horror movie: a movie so bad it goes beyond being funny bad back to just being bad.  At least the filmmakers were clever enough to do something new and remove "massacre" from the title.

Review: A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III

May 13th, 2013
glimpse-inside-the-mind-charles-swan-iii

Well, that happened. A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III is a less-than-winning drama-comedy starring Charlie Sheen as a successful graphic designer whose life crumbles apart when the love of his life (Katheryn Winnick) leaves him. Thanks to a few too many Brandy Alexanders and an active imagination, Charles Swan descends into a series of "fantasy-inspired reflections on his colorful past."

A Silver Linings Playbook DVD Review

May 1st, 2013
silver-linings-playbook

How do I start this review? How do I write the rest of it? The subject is Silver Linings Playbook, but not the movie. This review is about the DVD, and DVD reviews can only go so far. I’ve never been interested in going on and on about how good the video quality or audio clarity is, because after all, 99% of people don’t give a damn, especially when the movie is a drama-comedy.

Star Trek TNG: The Best of Both Worlds Blu-ray Review

April 30th, 2013
star-trek-best-of-both-worlds

“I am Locutus of Borg. Resistance is futile.”

These are the defining words spoken in one of the best story arcs of Star Trek: The Next Generation, now embodied in high definition. The Best of Both Worlds is now on Blu-ray, and not only does the two-episode “movie” look fantastic, it still holds up extremely well.

Review: ‘The Impossible’ Hits DVD Like a Tsunami

April 23rd, 2013
the-impossible-movie

Naomi Watts cries, screams and whimpers in The Impossible, a foolishly titled movie about a very serious incident involving Thailand, the year 2004 and a tsunami that killed hundreds of thousands of people. At times powerful, at other times drawn out and melodramatic, The Impossible is an engaging if overeager drama.

Review: ‘Price Check’ is Good Until It Isn’t

April 17th, 2013
price-check-movie

Parker Posey plays a spirited executive and Eric Mabius her right hand man in Price Check, an engaging but emotionally stunted drama that unfortunately never really goes anywhere. Even as I begin this review I have no idea where it will take me, for the movie itself is, ultimately, aimless.

Review: ‘Parental Guidance’ Has Guidance, Few Laughs

April 15th, 2013
parental-guidance

The last time Billy Crystal starred in a major live-action movie, the United States had yet to invade Iraq. The Internet bubble had just burst. And the movie in question was the unfortunate sequel Analyze That. Times have changed since then. Comedy has changed. But Billy Crystal hasn’t changed, and it shows in his new film Parental Guidance, now on DVD and Blu-ray.

Delayed Review: A True Friendship Between ‘Robot & Frank’

April 4th, 2013
robot-and-frank

Ah, the classic story of an old man and his friend robot. A tried and true tale that has been told through the centuries. And even yet, Robot & Frank is a surprisingly endearing drama-comedy about two unlikely friends, starring Frank Langella and the voice of Peter Sarsgaard.

Delayed Review: ‘Paranormal Activity 4′ More of the Same

April 2nd, 2013
paranormal-activity-4-kathryn-newton

Katie and her favorite demonic soul buddy are at it again, this time tormenting a Facetime-loving piece of jailbait and her family because they made the mistake of adopting a boy who is marked by the Devil. Common problem, and it usually doesn’t result in the number of deaths that occur here. It’s Paranormal Activity 4, folks, and it’s nothing you haven’t seen before.

Note to guys: if you are literally insane, your hot and neglected wife will cheat on you with a doctor. Such is the case in A Royal Affair, a romantic and engaging drama that deservedly earned an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Picture.

Jennifer Lawrence starred in three major theatrical releases in 2012. One was The Hunger Games, which made $700 million worldwide. Another was Silver Linings Playbook, which earned her an Oscar. And then there was House at the End of the Street. Yeah.
