The Yellow Handkerchief Movie Review

May 26th, 2011
yellow-handkerchief

I’ve said it before and I’ve said it again: as soon as you get past Kristen Stewart’s involvement in Twilight, her choice in projects is excellent. The Yellow Handkerchief, a drama which also stars William Hurt, Maria Bello and Eddie Redmayne, is yet another one of Stewart’s criminally overlooked films, a well made, superbly acted story few have seen.

Normally I would encourage you to read my articles. After all, there is nothing more important in this world than reading my spot-on opinions. But that’s not what I’m going to do today. Instead, I encourage you, my loyal, wonderful reader, to head over to Amazon.com, or to wherever you buy your movies these days, and purchase Platoon, which is now available for the first time on Blu-Ray.

I Am Number Four: Is Teresa Palmer Worth It?

May 24th, 2011
i-am-number-four

The sci-fi action thriller I Am Number Four comes to Blu-Ray and DVD this week, which means home audiences can now enjoy Teresa Palmer walking around in tight leather in high definition. Unfortunately, you have to sit through an hour and a half of teen drama and romance to get to that point – but it’s worth it.

Terminator/The Usual Suspects: The Books?

May 23rd, 2011
terminator-usual-suspects

The Terminator and The Usual Suspects are very similar in many ways. People die in both of them. And they are regarded as two of the best movies in modern cinema. One is about a cyborg sent from the future to assassinate the mother of humanity’s last chance, the other about a gimpy Kevin Spacey and a mysterious underworld figure. Very similar indeed.

Both movies were recently released by MGM and 20th Century Fox in book format. Book format!

The Roommate Movie Review

May 21st, 2011
roommate-leighton-meester

Sexy college girls. Frat parties. Obsessive roommates. Minka Kelly and Leighton Meester. The recipe is there, but chefs Christian E. Christiansen and Sonny Mallhi managed to make their dish taste like soggy cardboard. The Roommate is now on Blu-Ray and DVD, but no one should care.

The Other Woman Movie Review

May 17th, 2011
other-woman-natalie-portman

Hot off her Oscar-winning performance in Black Swan – but before she actually won the prestigious award – Natalie Portman delivered another fine performance in a small, limited release drama called The Other Woman. While not original, the movie is a surprisingly effective tale of a young woman struggling to overcome the grief of losing her child – and another testament to Portman’s acting ability.

Grown Ups Movie Review

May 11th, 2011
grown-ups

Proof that putting a bunch of funny men together in the same room doesn’t guarantee a funny movie, Grown Ups is a comedy so bland it’s actually funny to think that Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade and Rob Schneider all thought they had a gem on their hands.

I Nearly Threw Up, and It Was Good

May 8th, 2011
jackass-3d

Jackass 3D is just as funny as its predecessors (not counting the not-so-funny direct-to-DVD half sequels). There’s not much more that can be said. If you like "Jackass" then you’ll like the movie; if you don’t understand why the hell anyone would ever want to watch stupid guys doing stupid things, then you’re probably not even reading this review right now.

The Tourist Movie Review: Bad, and Then Worse

May 4th, 2011
the-tourist

What a year for Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. Or, more importantly, audiences of their films. In 2010, two of the biggest stars on the planet contributed to the world not one, not two, but three bad movies. They capped off the year by joining forces to make The Tourist, a pitifully dull and stupid caper that somehow was nominated for Best Comedy at the Golden Globes.

The Green Hornet DVD Review

May 3rd, 2011
green-hornet

For those of you who were skeptical about Seth Rogen as superhero The Green Hornet, now’s your chance. The movie is now available on DVD and Blu-Ray, which means you can buy it or rent it or watch it and love it forever. Or at least for two hours, which is how long the movie is.

the-way-back-ed-harris

From Peter Weir, the director of Master and Commander, comes the epic escape and survival film The Way Back. Released in December 2010 on its way to less than $3 million domestic box office gross, The Way Back is yet another head scratcher. With a captivating story and powerful performances, The Way Back deserves much more attention than it received, even with a disastrous ending.

Gulliver’s Travels Movie Review

April 26th, 2011
gullivers-travels

There is just something sad about remaking an old classic by injecting pop culture references and modern humor. Case in point: Gulliver’s Travels, the Jack Black-starring disaster that hits all the wrong notes.

Skyline vs. Battle: Los Angeles: The Real Truth

April 25th, 2011
skyline

Movies often come in pairs, but in the case of Skyline and Battle: Los Angeles, it is more than just mere coincidence. Much has been made about the similarities between the two alien invasion films, most notably that when the Aaron Eckhart-starring Battle: Los Angeles debuted in theaters this March, many critics and moviegoers asked, “Didn’t this same movie get released last fall?”

Hidden Gems: The Amazing Performances of Rabbit Hole

April 19th, 2011
rabbit-hole

The 2010 drama Rabbit Hole, out on DVD and Blu-Ray today, went largely overlooked by critics and audiences alike when it was released in late December. The movie received very little award attention – other than Nicole Kidman’s performance, which was nominated for an Academy Award. Despite only costing $5 million to make, the picture earned only $2.2 million in the United States, a stunningly low number given the talent involved.

The Incredibles Looks Incredible on Blu-Ray

April 18th, 2011
the-incredibles-blu-ray

In the dawning age of Blu-Ray and high definition, one studio that benefits more than most is Disney-Pixar. Not only do their Blu-Ray releases give us an excuse to relive the great movies they’ve produced over the last two decades, but Pixar films look absolutely great in high definition. The Incredibles, recently released to Blu-Ray, is no different.
