50/50: A Funny Movie About Cancer

February 6th, 2012
50-50

Cancer is no laughing matter. Life, however, is. In 50/50, which can best be described as a “cancer comedy”, director Jonathan Levine and writer Will Reiser prove that disease can be just as humorous as it is frightening. 50/50 is one of the best movies of 2011.

Hell and Back Again: Does It Deserve an Oscar?

February 2nd, 2012
hell-and-back-again

The Oscar-nominated documentary Hell and Back Again is an intimate portrait of one American soldier’s attempt to transition back to regular life after a harrowing deployment in which he was horribly injured. Unfortunately, despite its strengths, Hell and Back Again does not stand out in any way or form.

Taylor Lautner Puts the ‘Ab’ in Abduction

February 1st, 2012
abudction-taylor-lautner

Taylor Lautner alert! The perfect six pack is back, now under the tutelage of Oscar-nominated director John Singleton in Abduction, a cheesy action film that pits the lackluster actor against the CIA and other unsavory folk who are trying to kill him. Intended to be a post-Twilight franchise for Lautner and a box office comeback for Singleton, Abduction misses the mark.

Texas Killing Fields Movie Review

January 31st, 2012
texas-killing-fields

The Texas Killing Fields is about a serial killer. It’s been a while since a really good serial killer movie came along – well, one not directed by David Fincher (who did Seven, Zodiac and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) – and unfortunately the trend continues. Drab, uninteresting and featuring an unremarkable villain, there’s a reason why you’ve never heard of The Texas Killing Fields.

Review: ‘Seven Psychopaths’ is Now on Blu-ray

January 29th, 2012
seven-psychopaths

Marty is writing a movie called Seven Psychopaths, but he doesn’t want it to be violent. His best friend Billy informs him that that’s impossible: the movie is about seven psychopaths. Billy is right. Seven Psychopaths is a fun, funny and absurd movie, but it is not for the faint of heart.

Apollo 18 is a Really Bad Movie

January 26th, 2012
apollo-18-movie

Most people think Apollo 17 was the last manned mission to the moon. Most people are wrong. Like dead wrong. NASA, those scheming, secretive bastards, sent another spaceship to our orbiting little sister with the intent to explore a nearby crater and the unreported landing site of a Soviet craft. Apollo 18 gives a firsthand look at found footage from the mission.

I Don’t Know How She Does It Movie Review

January 24th, 2012
i-dont-know-how-she-does-it

Just when you thought you’d had enough of Sex and the City, Sarah Jessica Parker is back – without the girls – playing a very similar role in a very bad movie. I Don’t Know How She Does It begs a more important question: who green-lighted this piece of crap?

Better Late Than Never: Midnight in Paris Movie Review

January 13th, 2012
midnight-in-paris

In the very Woody Allen-esque comedy-drama Midnight in Paris, coincidentally written and directed by Woody Allen, Owen Wilson plays an awkward, curious man visiting, coincidentally, Paris, who would have been played by Woody Allen if the actor-director hadn’t finally figured out that audiences don’t want to see him flirting with young women anymore. Hailed as one of Allen’s finest movies in years, Midnight in Paris is a well done little movie. Nothing more, nothing less.

The Sad and Disturbing Tale of ‘Project Nim’

January 10th, 2012
project-nim

Chimpanzees are very similar to humans. They have emotions, they’re intelligent and they can even communicate on a limited basis. They are not, however, humans. Project Nim is a disturbing documentary that looks at the life of one chimp – named Nim – who was raised from birth as a child in a human home.

Point Blank Movie Review

December 29th, 2011
point-blank-movie

Pregnant wife, check. Upcoming promotion, check. Corrupt, murderous cops who’ve kidnapped said wife and future mother? Check. The French thriller À bout portant (Point Blank) is a fast-paced thriller that races from one action sequence to the next but fails to capitalize on its twists and turns.

The Change-Up Movie Review

December 21st, 2011
change-up

In the R-rated comedy The Change-Up, a married man and his exclusively single best friend switch bodies, giving them both the opportunity to live the lives they’ve both detested and envied. In other words, it’s Freaky Friday only with sex, nudity and masturbation jokes.

Margin Call Movie Review

December 20th, 2011
margin-call

The world is in an ecomonic rut. Maybe you noticed? Though the pieces were set long before Lehman Brothers collapsed in September 2008, the firm’s bankruptcy is commonly considered the action that set the dominoes in motion. In Margin Call, writer/director J.C. Chandor explores one day in a large, unnamed financial organization <ahem, cough, Lehman Brothers> as its employees and executives realize that it’s about to take a nosedive.

Colombiana Movie Review

December 20th, 2011
colombiana-zoe-saldana

At least Zoe Saldana has the Avatar and Star Trek franchises. Her latest attempt to lead a film all by herself is yet another forgettable action movie, following in the vein of The Losers and Takers. Colombiana has its moments but suffers from a sluggish screenplay and uninspired directing by Olivier Megaton.

Warrior Movie Review

December 19th, 2011
warrior-movie

A further sign that boxing’s heydey is over, Warrior is a surprisingly captivating sports drama about MMA fighting, featuring an intriguing story and inspired performances from its two leads. Many critics have compared it to Rocky and other boxing classics. While it isn’t nearly as good as Rocky, to even be considered in the same discussion is noteworthy.

Beginners Movie Review: Why You Should See It

December 15th, 2011
beginners

Your mom’s dead. I’m gay and have a young male lover. Oh, and I have cancer. Not exactly what you expect or want to hear from your 75-year-old father. Ewan McGregor stars as Oliver, a man who faces these scenarios and more in Beginners, an extremely good romantic drama that also stars Christopher Plummer and Melanie Laurent.
