Mirror Mirror Trailer Looks in the Mirror, Sees a Bad Movie

November 16th, 2011
snow-white-julia-roberts

The good news is that Mirror Mirror looks considerably different from its competitor Snow White and the Huntsman, to the degree that no one will confuse the two movies. The bad news is that the trailer pales in comparison in every possible way to the other movie’s trailer that debuted just last week.

Cars 2 Movie Review

November 2nd, 2011
cars-2

Lightning McQueen and Mater are back, for better or worse, threatening to bore audiences in Cars 2, the critically panned sequel to the worst Pixar movie ever made. After the dull brainsucker that was the original Cars, many Pixar fans – especially of the adult variety – scoffed at the idea that Pixar was overlooking other sequel-worthy properties, such as The Incredibles, to make yet another movie about talking cars reflecting on the simple things in life. Cars 2 also represents the first obvious cash grab for the studio that can [almost] do no wrong.

Visiting Africa Made Me Want to Watch The Lion King Blu-Ray

October 5th, 2011
lion-king

It’s sadly true. On my adventures into the broad, wondrous country known as Africa I saw lions, tigers and bears, minus the tigers and bears, and I immediately wanted to watch Disney’s The Lion King. I paid thousands of dollars and traveled halfway around the world to see the real thing, and it made me want to watch a cartoon about singing warthogs. Oh, I am just so American.

Rango: When You Combine Family Films and Drugs

August 24th, 2011
rango

The director of Pirates of the Caribbean and Johnny Depp reunite for yet another blockbuster, this one an animated western about a chameleon that can best be described as a family friendly acid trip amalgam of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, A Fistful of Dollars, City Slickers and the strange “dream” sequence from the second or third Pirates movie. If that sounds crazy to you, Rango is, but Rango is also one of the better movies of the year.

Mars Needs Moms Movie Review

August 11th, 2011
mars-needs-moms

Mars Needs Moms is many things. It’s a $150 million sci-fi “epic.” It’s also an epic flop. And failure. But as bad as it is, it deserves praise: this movie singlehandedly destroyed Robert Zemeckis’ terrible motion capture studio and forced the once-acclaimed director back to live action films.

Rio Movie Review

August 2nd, 2011
rio-movie

The animated movie Rio comes to DVD and Blu-Ray this week. Starring the voice of Jessie Eisenberg (The Social Network) as a socially awkward and flightless parrot who finds himself on the run from exotic bird smugglers in Brazil, Rio will appeal to kids but offers nothing new among the barrage of CGI films released in recent years.

Winnie the Pooh Finds Honey, Critic’s Inner Child

July 15th, 2011
winnie-the-pooh

We all have our different comfort foods; things that make us feel that everything is going to be ok.  It might be macaroni and cheese, apple pie, a warm cup of coffee, or a nice cold beer.  You know, whatever floats your boat.  Well, for me, Winnie the Pooh is the comfort food for the child in me.

Steven Spielberg’s War Horse Trailer is Boring

June 30th, 2011
war-horse

The first trailer for Steven Spielberg’s War Horse is now online. The movie is almost assured multiple Oscar nominations due to the pedigree alone, let alone the “feel good” nature of the story. There’s understandable excitement for the picture, as there should be due to the director alone.

So why am I so disinterested in this property?

MegaMind Movie Review

June 9th, 2011
megamind

The second animated film of 2010 to feature a goofy super villain as the protagonist, Megamind‘s fall release appeared to be too little, too late, despite starring the voices of Will Ferrell, Tina Fey and Brad Pitt. Thankfully, the DreamWorks Animation comedy is significantly different than Despicable Me, much closer to The Incredibles in tone and delivery.

Kung Fu Panda 2 Movie Review

May 26th, 2011
kung-fu-panda-2

It took me a long time to finally come around to seeing the first Kung Fu Panda.  Not sure what my hesitation was, but when I finally saw the film I was pleasantly surprised.  The first film sported beautiful animation, great voice performances and an animated script that actually made me laugh.

Gnomeo & Juliet: A Timeless Tale?

May 23rd, 2011
gnomeo-and-juliet

There are few things more classic than the tale of “Romeo and Juliet”. The timeless love story has been read or seen in some form or another by the vast majority of educated audiences. But never like this. Never animated, acted out by gnomes. Ladies and gentlefolk, I introduce to thee Gnomeo & Juliet.

The Adventures of Tintin Teaser Trailer

May 18th, 2011
adventures-tintin

A day late, but not too late. The first teaser trailer for The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn is now online. That might sound goofy, it probably looks ridiculous, but what’s matter is the name on the director’s chair:

Steven Spielberg.

Gulliver’s Travels Movie Review

April 26th, 2011
gullivers-travels

There is just something sad about remaking an old classic by injecting pop culture references and modern humor. Case in point: Gulliver’s Travels, the Jack Black-starring disaster that hits all the wrong notes.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader Movie Review

April 7th, 2011
voyage-of-the-dawn-treader

Talking mice, weird creatures and Christian values are back in the third entry in The Chronicles of Narnia franchise, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Unlike the first two movies, Dawn Treader suffers from a lack of name recognition. Oh, and B-grade production values.

Tangled Movie Review

March 29th, 2011
tangled

Given that my own hair is thinning, it gives me no great pleasure to introduce Tangled, Disney’s Oscar-nominated animated retelling of the tale of Rapunzel, which showcases more hair than a Siberian woman in the winter. The surprise hit received rave reviews when it was released theatrically, and is now being released on DVD and Blu-Ray this week.
