Review: ‘Blancanieves’ is Another Snow White Movie

March 28th, 2013
blancanieves

With Snow White And The Huntsmen and the abysmal Mirror Mirror, the past year has seen its fair share of Snow White projects.  By a mile the most unique offering to the category is Blancanieves, Spain’s official entry into this year’s Academy Awards.

Review: ‘Beautiful Creatures’

February 13th, 2013
beautiful-creatures

The next Twilight franchise is here, but with a twist:  Beautiful Creatures, about a teenage boy who is drawn to a strange girl who has a strange family (sound familiar?), actually has intelligent writing. Shocking. Breathtaking. And kind of fun.

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters Movie Review

January 25th, 2013
hansel-and-gretel-witch-hunters

Sometimes you just wish the witch had won. After surviving the candy house and the evil witch within, Hansel and Gretel have grown up to be two attractive witch hunters who like to swear, kill witches and repeatedly get the shit beaten out of them. Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton star in the wannabe franchise starter Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, a movie that suffers from painfully clunky dialogue and, amazingly, too much action.

‘The Hobbit’ Review: Peter Jackson Takes a Serious Risk

December 14th, 2012
hobbit-gollum

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, but Peter Jackson thinks otherwise. In his heralded return to Middle Earth, the director of the award-winning Lord of the Rings franchise keeps many things the same but makes one very risky change that has a detrimental effect on the overall film. Your opinion of the film will rely heavily on whether you can get past this alteration.

Review: ‘Life of Pi’ is Dreamlike Goodness

November 20th, 2012
life-of-pi

Sometimes life throws you curveballs. Sometimes things don’t go the way you envisioned. And sometimes you end up stranded in the middle of the Pacific Ocean trapped in a lifeboat with a hungry Bengal tiger. I really hate when that third situation arises.

Twilight is no Harry Potter, according to the box office numbers for the opening weekend of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, presumably and hopefully the last entry in the wretched franchise.

Snow White Blu-ray Review: Style, No Substance

September 11th, 2012
snow-white-charlize-theron

Some would describe Snow White and the Huntsman as a fun movie. Others would describe it as a glossy mess. Regardless, there’s no argument that director Rupert Sanders is as good at creating stunning visuals as he is at directing his way into Kristen Stewart’s pants. Unfortunately, the bonus features included on the new Blu-ray release – available in stores now – are immediately forgettable.

Review + Giveaway: The Lord of the Rings Blu-rays

September 5th, 2012
lord-of-the-rings

The Lord of the Rings is one of the greatest trilogies of all time, not only because of its sweeping story arcs and extraordinary production values but because it was filmed as one, long movie that happened to be split into three parts. There is also little argument that the extended versions of the three movies, with over two hours of additional footage, are superior to the theatrical releases. In fact, it’s hard to think of not watching the extended versions.

Snow White and the Huntsman: Sexy But Hollow

June 1st, 2012
snow-white-kristen-stewart

Snow White and the Huntsman is like the bitchy girl in high school. She’s attractive, sexy and stylish, but cold and hollow underneath. She may be worth a ride or two around the block, but she’s never going to meet the parents. She’s nice to look at, even entertaining, but leaves you wanting more.

March 30th, 2012
mirror-mirror-lily-collins-dwarves

Hooray!  Finally the Snow White adaptation that we’ve all been excited for has arrived. Slick visuals, Chris Hemsworth and Kristen Stewart look great….oh wait – that’s Snow White and the Huntsman, which comes out this summer.  Instead, this is the Relativity version that had been jockeying for release schedule supremacy with its counterpart to ensure it reached audiences first.  There’s a reason for that.
