Review: ‘Kon-Tiki’ is Like ‘Life of Pi,’ Only Great

May 17th, 2013
kon-tiki-movie-2012

The more I think about it, Life of Pi was a stupid movie. Sure, it looked great and was downright dazzling on the big screen, but watch it on a television and it’s a film about a CGI tiger that fluctuates between having terrific and mediocre special effects. The story is sort of dull, the ending anticlimactic and the whole religion piece doesn’t make any sense. Thankfully, there’s Kon-Tiki.

Review: ‘Beyond the Hills’ is Not What You’d Expect

March 29th, 2013
beyond-the-hills

When is an exorcism not an exorcism? And when is an exorcism movie not at all an exorcism movie? In Beyond the Hills, writer/director Cristian Mungis (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days) takes a raw and sparing look at the true story of a failed Romanian exorcism that occurred in 2005. You’ll find no green vomit or flying objects here, as Beyond the Hills is less about exorcism and more about how dangerous blind faith can be.

Review: ‘Blancanieves’ is Another Snow White Movie

March 28th, 2013
blancanieves

With Snow White And The Huntsmen and the abysmal Mirror Mirror, the past year has seen its fair share of Snow White projects.  By a mile the most unique offering to the category is Blancanieves, Spain’s official entry into this year’s Academy Awards.

Review: ‘A Royal Affair,’ A Royal Experience

March 26th, 2013
royal-affair

Note to guys: if you are literally insane, your hot and neglected wife will cheat on you with a doctor. Such is the case in A Royal Affair, a romantic and engaging drama that deservedly earned an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Picture.

Review: Is ‘Amour’ Worth Amour-ing?

March 13th, 2013
amour

Critics amour’d themselves some Amour. Oscar voters did, too, awarding the drama gold for Best Foreign Language Film and handing it a rare-for-subtitles nomination for Best Picture. As for me? Amour is a good movie with good performances, but didn’t we just see this movie a couple years ago? And given the director, isn’t the ending positively predictable?

Lore Movie Review

Review by Nathan Samdahl (B-)

The beginning of each year is usually littered with the releases of foreign films selected for submission to the Academy Awards but that didn’t make the final cut.  These entries typically have merit, but it is easy to see why they didn’t garner a coveted Oscar nomination. The Australian drama Lore falls into this group, a beautifully shot film with powerful performances but a story that lacks the emotional resonance to elevate it to the next level.

Review: The ‘Tabu’ Experiment Almost Works but Doesn’t

January 25th, 2013
tabu

Tabu is an often beautiful and stylistically ambitious film that sadly comes up a bit short on its execution.  This was one of the more challenging viewing experiences I’ve had in recent months.  There are parts of this film where I was on the cusp of breaking out in laughter or crying for a character, but simply couldn’t.  Describing Tabu as emotionally muted would probably be appropriate.

Review: Rust and Bone

December 29th, 2012
rust-and-bone

Marion Cotillard shows some flesh, loses some flesh and shares some, too, in Rust and Bone, Jacques Audiard’s follow-up to his Oscar-nominated drama A Prophet. The movie, about a crippled woman who develops an unlikely relationship with a knuckle fighter, features powerful performances but never delivers a knockout blow.

Review: ‘Barbara’, Germany’s Bid for Oscar Gold

December 20th, 2012
barbara

An East German doctor is torn between her desire for freedom in the West and her devotion to her patients in Barbara, the official German entry for Best Foreign Language Picture at the upcoming Academy Awards. Featuring a strong performance by Nina Hoss and an intriguing story, Barbara is a well done movie, though its delivery may be too muted for American audiences.

Review: Oscar-Nominated ‘Footnote’ is Almost Great

November 7th, 2012
footnote-movie

Silent tension erupts between a father and son both nominated for the same prestigious award in the Oscar-nominated foreign film Footnote, a compelling drama that is engaging until it isn’t.

Review: ‘Klown’ is Inappropriate, but Is It Funny?

November 5th, 2012
klown

Allegedly, some critics have compared the Danish comedy Klown to The Hangover. Others, as promoted on the Blu-ray cover, call it "the funniest movie of the year." Klown is not like The Hangover nor is it the funniest movie of the year, but the oddly disturbing, politically incorrect and painfully awkward film has just enough cringe-inducing moments to make it worth the journey.

Review: ‘A Cat in Paris’ is Worth Nine Lives

October 9th, 2012
cat-in-paris

A cat burglar steals a necklace and a cat puts the police on his trail in the entertaining and imaginative cartoon A Cat in Paris, an Oscar-nominated animated thriller that defies expectations and pleases on all the right levels. With a running time of only 62 minutes, it’s also an extremely quick watch.

Review: ‘The Intouchables’ Gets a Rare A+ Review

October 7th, 2012
intouchables

There’s a serious problem with American audiences. Most do not like foreign films. Subtitles. People who speak other languages. No special effects. It’s a serious problem because films like The Intouchables (Intouchables) go largely overlooked in the States, despite the movie being an international box office hit (nearly $400 million and counting) and one of the best movies of the 21st century.

Review: The Raid: Redemption is a Violent Good Time

October 3rd, 2012
raid-redemption

One of the most brutal action movies in recent memory, The Raid: Redemption is a non-stop, slick and violent thriller that delivers on all fronts. Superbly directed by Gareth Evans, The Raid is a must-see for action fans.

Chico & Rita is an epic romantic drama that follows the lives of two Cuban lovers as they fall in and out of love with one another over several decades. Emotional and engaging, the movie features a strong story and compelling characters. It is also an animated film.
