Circumstance Movie Review

December 13th, 2011
circumstance

An Iranian-based film hardly seems the setting for a sexy romantic drama about two teenage girls who fall in love with one another, but Circumstance relishes its taboo topic, the very camerawork oozing with sensuality. Circumstance is a beautiful and alluring film, one that works on many levels, painting a picture of repression while also focusing on a non-traditional love triangle.

TrollHunter Movie Review

November 16th, 2011
trollhunter

Trolls exist, and they are big, angry and smell like trolls. In the found-footage adventure tale TrollHunter, a group of college filmmakers investigating the mysterious deaths of several bears in Norway track down a bear hunter who is anything but a bear hunter. What ensues is a surprisingly slick, engaging and fun movie about friendship, love and dogs. Or about trolls.

Is Jackie Chan’s 100th Movie Any Good?

October 8th, 2011
1911-jackie-chan

Jackie Chan’s 100th film is now playing in select theaters, and if you were unaware, you’re not alone. Unlike the movies he’s known for, 1911, about the Wuchang Rebellion that overthrew the Qing Dynasty, is a gritty, serious and violent war epic. It’s unfortunately also a terrible movie.

13 Assassins: Why Killing Evil People is a Good Thing

August 25th, 2011
13-assassins

Evil lords are evil. They like to torture, kill and rape their subjects and have fun doing it. Shooting children with arrows? They love that, too. Why? Because they’re evil. But evil lords sometimes need to be put in their place – by the good guys. And often that means killing them. Enter 13 Assassins.

Dogtooth Movie Review

July 27th, 2011
dogtooth

Nominated for Best Foreign Language Picture, the Greek film Dogtooth is one of the best – and also the strangest – movies of the last year. An exploration of humanity without the typical confines set by modern society, or something along those lines, Dogtooth is compelling, alluring, troubling and memorable.

[Rec] 2: Hugs, Kisses and Demon Zombies

July 14th, 2011
rec-2

Just when you thought horror was contained, directors Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza return with [Rec] 2, which continues moments after the last one ended. [Rec] 2 is an entertaining and somewhat scary monster flick that suffers simply from the fact that it’s retreading material seen in the previous movie – and the American remake Quarantine.

The Silent House, or The Boring House

May 7th, 2011
the-silent-house

In Gustavo Hernandez’s La casa muda, or en inglés The Silent House, audiences are treated to a movie with a single, 79-minute take – a gimmick, yes, but an ambitious gimmick nonetheless. Unfortunately, as with so many movies based on a gimmick, the filmmakers forget the basic rule of film: entertain the audience.

The Milk of Sorrow Movie Review

March 6th, 2011
milk-of-sorrow

The Oscar-nominated Peruvian drama The Milk of Sorrow (La teta asustada) is about Fausta, an emotionally and sexually repressed young woman who has grown up with a psychological fear of intimacy following her mother’s brutal rape. It’s also about boring the audience.

I Saw the Devil Movie Review

March 4th, 2011
i-saw-the-devil

Easily one of the most brutally violent films I’ve seen in years, I Saw The Devil pulls no punches in its portrayal of revenge come full circle. Korean director Kim ji-Woon, who created another one of my favorite Asian imports, A Tale of Two Sisters, shows he has improved with age as the film’s direction pushes it way beyond the typical revenge-torture film.
