Let’s get this out of the way: titling a horror movie The Last Exorcism was a bad idea. Why? Because when you make its inevitable sequel, you end up with the ridiculously awful title The Last Exorcism Part II.

Just when you think we’ve moved past the belief that radioactive waste can cause mutated monsters, along comes Chernobyl Diaries, a silly albeit not entirely misguided horror movie from the writer of Paranormal Activity.

I have come to the conclusion that the apocalyptic world Paul W.S. Anderson has created in his Resident Evil franchise is exactly how he wants the world to be. Every movie he makes pushes humanity closer and closer to the brink of evolving into monstrous, CGI-animated creatures.

Does Ashley Greene need a new agent? It’s hard to say. On the one hand, of her five widely released movies, four are among the biggest blockbusters of the last decade. On the other hand, those four were the Twilight movies. The fifth is The Apparition, a truly terrible horror movie that earned only $7 million worldwide.

The end of the world is apparently scary enough, because 2012 has been an extremely disappointing year for horror movies. The Woman in Black showed promise, until it didn’t. The Devil Inside made me want to go to hell. Many others failed to deliver, too. V/H/S, on the other hand, manages to buck the trend by teaching you not to have a threesome with a demon.

A boy named Norman sees dead people. He battles an evil witch and a pack of zombies. But Norman isn’t in a horror flick; he’s the main character in the family film ParaNorman, a beautifully crafted and imaginative stop-motion-capture movie that, while far from groundbreaking, is fun to watch.

Your wife has been murdered. Your baby has been kidnapped. And you’re not sure if it’s all in your head, or if demonic children who feed on fear really are responsible for it all. Citadel is the intriguing new movie from writer/director Ciaran Foy, and one of the more unique horror entries in recent memory.

Abraham Lincoln is often regarded as the greatest president to have served the United States of America. He helped abolish slavery. He sacrificed the lives of many Americans to reunite the north and south. He singlehandedly saved the country from a legion of vampires.

A vintage 1990′s classic made its Blu-ray debut last week. Disney said, “so what?”
Arachnophobia is the best spider movie of all time, and it still stands the test of time. Yes, it’s a bit goofy, a bit cheesy, but even still it makes you want to check that popcorn before you stick your hand in the bowl and the shower faucet in the morning. As silly as it is – John Goodman plays a wisecracking exterminator – the movie lives up to its name.

Paramount Pictures has released a new movie trailer for Paranormal Activity 4, which has the possessed chick and her kidnapped nephew (if I remember correctly) wreaking havoc on a teenage girl who lives nearby. Plot is really immaterial as you know what you’re going to get, but I still find these movies at least a little exhilarating, even if they are predictable.

One of the best movies of 2012 debuts on DVD and Blu-ray this week, and that movie is Cabin in the Woods. What looks like a stereotypical horror movie about a group of young stupid things who go to – you guessed it – a cabin in the woods only to get dismembered one by one is anything but, but to say anything more than that would ruin what makes it so good in the first place.

Uh, yeah, that just happened. With summer fading and the summer movie season pooping out little nuggets of forgettable movies, it was time to turn to Netflix for entertainment. Though the service has gotten hammered over the last couple years, it still has a rich database of streaming movies as long as you’re willing to reach into the past. Here are a few movies and television shows that caught my eye…
