John Carpenter’s The Ward Ain’t No Thing

September 8th, 2011
the-ward-amber-heard

After a decade away from theaters and 15 years since his last good movie, horror master John Carpenter returns with a new tale, The Ward. The movie unfortunately reminds us that Carpenter’s best years are far behind him.

Tucker & Dale vs Evil Movie Review

September 6th, 2011
tucker-dale-vs-evil

From the director of nothing and the writer of also-nothing comes a movie for everyone, where victims and killers are one and the same and the bad guys are actually the good guys and the good guys are also the bad guys and lots of people die gruesome deaths and each death is funnier than the last. Yes, it’s Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, one of the funniest and ingenious movies of 2011.

Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark, Be Afraid of this Crappy Movie

September 5th, 2011
dont-be-afraid-of-the-dark-katie-holmes

After spending weeks disappointing friends by informing them that the creepy looking horror movie Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark isn’t actually directed by Guillermo del Toro, I finally went to go see the movie so I could be disappointed myself. Karma’s  a bitch. Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark is one of the worst movies of the year.

Apollo 18 Flies Shakily Into Theaters

September 2nd, 2011
apollo-18-movie

The latest “lost footage” film to hit theaters is Apollo 18, a movie about a disturbing finding found on the moon. And no, what the astronauts find aren’t Transformers.

At one point, Apollo 18 had promise. That was until it got bounced around the release calendar and The Weinstein Company decided to not screen the movie for critics. That’s not one but two red flags.

Since we haven’t been able to see it ahead of time, we’re relying on you to tell us what you think!

Priest Movie Review: Not So Heavenly

August 18th, 2011
priest-paul-bettany

Paul Bettany is at it again, trying to be a Goody Two-Shoes by saving humanity from eternal damnation in Priest, on DVD and Blu-Ray this week. If Priest looks a lot like 2009′s Legion, which starred Bettany as an angel trying to save humanity from eternal damnation, you’re not alone. And like Legion, Priest falls short of its intended goal, whatever it was, seemingly satisfied with being mediocre.

The Woman in Black is One Scary Woman

August 18th, 2011
woman-in-black-daniel-radcliffe

Harry Potter is gone, but Daniel Radcliffe is still around, and if this new trailer is any indication, he may be around for a while.

In The Woman in Black, Radcliffe stars as a Victorian-era man who moves into an extremely haunted house. That’s the plot, but the marketing team at CBS Films has assembled an absolutely stellar teaser trailer to make it stand out from the rest in the genre.

Final Destination 5: Blood, Gore and More Gore

August 12th, 2011
final-destination-5

The Final Destination franchise has been around for over a decade, and its fifth edition – Final Destination 5 – debuts today. The original is a horror classic, a unique spin on the typical slasher flick with an invisible, unbeatable villain. The sequels just rehash the same story, albeit with worse actors and shoddier production values.

Red Riding Hood Movie Review

July 26th, 2011
red-riding-hood

From the director of Twilight comes Red Riding Hood, another fantasy-based romantic thriller that unfortunately lacks magic, intrigue or anything of real value. So in that regard, it’s exactly like Twilight. Starring Amanda Seyfried, Red Riding Hood is an instantly forgettable movie.

The Thing 2011 Trailer

July 15th, 2011
the-thing-2011

The first trailer for the horror remake/prequel The Thing is now online. The first thing I noticed: it looks a hell of a lot like the John Carpenter version. The second thing I noticed: it doesn’t look as good as the John Carpenter version. That’s not at all surprising.

[Rec] 2: Hugs, Kisses and Demon Zombies

July 14th, 2011
rec-2

Just when you thought horror was contained, directors Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza return with [Rec] 2, which continues moments after the last one ended. [Rec] 2 is an entertaining and somewhat scary monster flick that suffers simply from the fact that it’s retreading material seen in the previous movie – and the American remake Quarantine.

Season of the Witch: Same Season as Bad Movies

June 23rd, 2011
season-of-the-witch

Nicolas Cage’s latest project to embody the “anytime, anywhere” motto of his career, Season of the Witch comes to DVD and Blu-Ray on June 28, promising loads of medieval dumbery. No offense to Ron Perlman, but you know what’s in store when he’s the leading costar.

Super 8 Movie Review

June 10th, 2011
super-8

J.J. Abrams, one of the better directors working today, and Steven Spielberg, one of the best directors of all time, collaborate for the first time for the nostalgic sci-fi thriller Super 8. An amalgam of Spielberg’s and Abrams’ styles, Super 8 is an entertaining popcorn flick, but sadly one that never reaches its potential.

Does True Blood Season 3 Jump the Shark?

May 31st, 2011
true-blood-season-3

With the passing of The Sopranos, The Wire, Deadwood and other acclaimed series in recent years, HBO was surely pleased to see that audiences welcomed Alan Ball’s True Blood with open arms, tilted necks and gushing veins. The series was an instant audience and critical favorite, striking the right balance between seriousness and humor while still offering plenty of blood, guts, gore, sex, nudity and violence.
