May 27th, 2011
shark-night

Earlier this week, the movie poster for the upcoming horror film Shark Night 3D swam onto the Internet, and yesterday Relativity Media unleashed the movie trailer, which is… not as campy as the title suggests. That doesn’t mean it looks good, however.

My Soul to Take Took My Soul

May 10th, 2011
my-soul-to-take

While Wes Craven made a valiant attempt at a comeback this year with Scream 4, he unfortunately reminded audiences – well, a few people anyway – how far he’d fallen with last fall’s My Soul to Take, easily one of the worst mainstream horror movies ever made.

The Silent House, or The Boring House

May 7th, 2011
the-silent-house

In Gustavo Hernandez’s La casa muda, or en inglés The Silent House, audiences are treated to a movie with a single, 79-minute take – a gimmick, yes, but an ambitious gimmick nonetheless. Unfortunately, as with so many movies based on a gimmick, the filmmakers forget the basic rule of film: entertain the audience.

The Scariest Movie of 2011: Insidious

May 4th, 2011
insidious

Ghost movies have officially made a comeback. Paranormal Activity was a fluke. Its sequel was a continuation of that fluke. But with Insidious, the third downright scary – and highly profitable – ghost story to hit theaters in the last year and a half, it’s clear horror is trending back to the supernatural.

Stake Land Movie Review

April 25th, 2011
stake-land

Vampires never get old. Unless they’re sparkly and romantic. Thankfully, in the new indie thriller Stake Land, the vampires are bloody, nasty and pissed off – just like they should be. Even better, the movie is surprisingly good, if not particularly original.

Why Scream 4 is a Worthy Sequel

April 20th, 2011
scream-4

When it was first released, Scream was considered an original and refreshing take on the slasher genre. By Scream 3, some of the shine had worn off as it turned inwards to parody itself. Ten years later, Wes Craven and his surviving cast return for a fourth entry in the series, and by and large it’s a bloody success.

April 16th, 2011
scream-4-rio

After more than 10 years away from theaters, the Scream franchise returned in the form of Scream 4, reuniting stars Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette with director Wes Craven and a new lineup of young pretty things to be splattered, gutted and witticismed to a spot six feet underground.

Box office winner, right?

I Saw the Devil Movie Review

March 4th, 2011
i-saw-the-devil

Easily one of the most brutally violent films I’ve seen in years, I Saw The Devil pulls no punches in its portrayal of revenge come full circle. Korean director Kim ji-Woon, who created another one of my favorite Asian imports, A Tale of Two Sisters, shows he has improved with age as the film’s direction pushes it way beyond the typical revenge-torture film.

i-spit-on-your-grave-2010

Just when you think you can’t stand yet another horror movie retread, along comes the unrated thriller I Spit on Your Grave, a brutally graphic remake of the brutally graphic 1978 original. Directed by Steven R. Monroe, the movie is well done and violent. Whether it’s a pleasant viewing experience is another matter.

And Soon the Darkness Movie Review

January 31st, 2011
and-soon-the-darkness-amber-heard

It’s a tried and true premise: combine some good looking girls, very little clothing and some bad guys looking to kidnap them and you have an effective thriller. And Soon the Darkness brings together two of today’s hottest actresses – Amber Heard and Odette Yustman – and nearly does just that.

The Rite Movie Review

January 30th, 2011
the-rite-anthony-hopkins

Demons run amok – but always out of sight – in 2011′s obligatory exorcism movie, this one called The Rite. Starring Colin O’Donaghue and Anthony Hopkins, the brooding thriller maintains a measure of tension but still manages to be one of the more boring exorcism movies in recent memory.
