Margaret: The Epic Drama That Almost Wasn’t

July 10th, 2012
margaret-anna-paquin

Complex, star-studded and gripping, Margaret had serious potential for award contention – back when it was made in 2007. Five years later, the drama arrives on DVD and Blu-ray with a whimper, a victim of multiple edits, lawsuits and rumors. The final result, a 150-minute epic, is a paradox: it is simultaneously incredible and a muddled mess.

Oliver Stone Returns to Form with ‘Savages’

July 6th, 2012
savages-blake-lively

Look at Oliver Stone’s career from one side and you see a string of celebrated classics. Platoon. Wall Street. Born on the Fourth of July. The Doors. JFK. Natural Born Killers. Impressive. Look at his 21st century career, however, and it paints a different picture. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. W. World Trade Center. Alexander. A couple mediocre films. A few disasters.

The Amazing Spider-Man Movie Review

July 4th, 2012
amazing-spider-man-suit

Ten years and two months after Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man dominated theaters and advanced the comic book movie genre to a whole new level, the web slinger is back, restarting from scratch with a new origin story that is strangely reminiscent of the previous origin story. Cursed by its own lack of originality, The Amazing Spider-Man struggles mightily to shed the not-so-distant memory of its predecessors, but deep down there is a well done movie that sets the stage for some highly charged sequels.

The Hunter Movie Review

July 3rd, 2012
hunter-willem-dafoe

When Willem Dafoe sets his sights on something, he’s going to get it. That’s too bad for the elusive Tasmanian tiger in the drama-thriller The Hunter, in which the celebrated actor plays a mercenary hired by a secretive military biotech company to track down the last remaining specimen of the animal. Usually a loner, he bonds with the troubled mother and her two children that he lodges with while on his quest.

God Bless America Movie Review

“Who you’re killing next? Do you take requests? Because I was thinking maybe some Kardashians, my gym coach. People who give high fives. Really, any jock. Twihards. People who talk about punk rock.”

Magic Mike Movie Review: Channing Tatum Gets Naked

June 29th, 2012
magic-mike-channing-tatum

I just watched a Channing Tatum stripper movie. By myself. In a theater. And I sort of kind of I’ve got to admit liked it. Let me rephrase. I just watched a new Steven Soderbergh drama. And it was good.

Wrath of the Titans Movie Review

June 28th, 2012

Twenty minutes in, don’t know what’s happening. An hour in, don’t care. Movie’s over, some big giant god monster just blew up. That just about sums up Wrath of the Titans, the sequel no one was asking for to the 3D laughfest Clash of the Titans. Wrath of the Titans is now on Blu-ray.

Pixar Returns to Form: A ‘Brave’ Movie Review

June 22nd, 2012
brave

After a rare Pixar miss with Cars 2, arguably the last film from their arsenal that deserved a sequel, the animation giant returns to form with Brave.  From beginning to end, Brave is a charming, fun-filled thrill ride featuring one of Disney’s sassiest princesses yet.  While the lessons Princess Merida learns are valuable, I wouldn’t be surprised if many youngsters attempt to emulate some of her more rebellious qualities.

Grassroots Movie Review

June 21st, 2012
grassroots

The high-stakes world of Seattle politics gets the big screen treatment with Grassroots. I’d be lying if I said it was a movie only a Seattleite could love, because Grassroots is a well-acted and entertaining drama – albeit one that fades in the home stretch.

The Devil Inside, Straight From the Pits of Hell

June 20th, 2012
devil-inside

I’m an atheist, yet I’ve always found exorcism movies scary. Maybe that’s because if the Devil did exist, I would have no defense. Regardless, I’ve always had an affinity for stories about people possessed by demons, even though every single one follows the exact same formula. Despite staying true to script, The Devil Inside is one of the worst movies I’ve seen since last year’s Apollo 18.

Big Miracle Movie Review

June 19th, 2012
big-miracle

Jim from “The Office” and Drew Barrymore star in the lighthearted drama Big Miracle, which is apparently based on a true story about three whales trapped under a sheet of ice, miles from the open ocean. Despite being sappy and melodramatic, Big Miracle is a movie that is hard to hate – and one that gets you rooting for the inevitable salvation of those silly whales.

Rock of Ages Movie Review

June 15th, 2012
rock-of-ages-julianne-hough

The popular hair band musical Rock of Ages hits the big screen with an all-star cast and over 20 classic rock songs, and while short on character development and quality performances, it’s an entertaining two-hour romp that’s easy to enjoy.

Extraterrestrial Movie Review: It’s No Timecrimes

June 15th, 2012
extraterrestrial-movie-2012

From Nacho Vigalondo, the director of Timecrimes, comes Extraterrestrial, a comedic thriller that looks at the evolution of four people’s behaviors after they learn that a giant spaceship has arrived over Madrid and that much of the population has fled, or disappeared. Unlike Timecrimes, unfortunately, Extraterrestrial doesn’t leave much of an impression.

Sherlock Holmes 2 Blu-ray: Why So Complicated?

June 13th, 2012
sherlock-holmes-robert-downey-jr

As studios scramble to appeal to the digital download fans while still clinging to the lucrative-but-quickly-fading home video model, we get awkward releases such as the Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows Blu-ray combo pack, which comes with a Blu-ray disc (of course), a DVD and something called Ultraviolet (“your movies in the cloud!”).
