Review: Is ‘Pitch Perfect’ Pitch Perfect?

January 31st, 2013
pitch-perfect

It was only a matter of time. Following in the wake of Fox’s hit TV show “Glee,” Pitch Perfect is a movie about musically neurotic teenagers and/or college students who battle one another for musical supremacy. Original? No. Entertaining? Yes. Funny? Sort of.

Review: Does ‘How to Survive a Plague’ Deserve an Oscar?

January 29th, 2013
how-to-survive-a-plague

Maybe I just wasn’t in a documentary mood today. After watching Searching for Sugar Man, which underperformed expectations, I immediately switched to another Oscar-nominated documentary feature, the much heralded How to Survive a Plague. While good, it too was not the groundbreaking film it was supposed to be.

Review: ‘Lincoln’ Revisted

January 28th, 2013
lincoln-revisited

I am one of the ten percent. I am one of the ten percent of critics who did not give Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-nominated drama Lincoln a positive review (according to Rotten Tomatoes). I was expecting a sweeping epic, and instead I got a courtroom drama. Were my expectations out of line? What did others see (not just critics, but regular moviegoers, too) that I didn’t? What did I miss?

Review: Does ‘Searching for Sugar Man’ Deserve an Oscar?

January 28th, 2013
searching-for-sugar-man

In the 1970′s, a musician named Sixto Rodriguez released a few records that failed to resonate with American audiences. Meanwhile, in South Africa, his music came to signify the opposition to apartheid and he became more popular than Elvis and the Rolling Stones. Too bad he died before he could ever perform for his fans. Or did he?

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters Movie Review

January 25th, 2013
hansel-and-gretel-witch-hunters

Sometimes you just wish the witch had won. After surviving the candy house and the evil witch within, Hansel and Gretel have grown up to be two attractive witch hunters who like to swear, kill witches and repeatedly get the shit beaten out of them. Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton star in the wannabe franchise starter Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, a movie that suffers from painfully clunky dialogue and, amazingly, too much action.

Review: Dustin Hoffman Directs a ‘Quartet’

January 24th, 2013
quartet-dustin-hoffman

Cocoon has been remade, but the aliens have been replaced with opera music. Quartet is a movie about a retirement home for aging musicians, where four old fogies of varying physical and mental capabilities reunite for one final performance. Funny if ultimately insignificant, Quartet is a worthy directorial debut for Dustin Hoffman.

Review: Sleepwalk with Me

January 24th, 2013
sleepwalk-with-me

A struggling comedian suffers from sleepwalking but fails to incorporate that personal fact into his routine until halfway through the movie in Sleepwalk with Me, a surprisingly entertaining film that defies expectations and establishes itself as one of the most overlooked movies of 2012.

Review: ‘Mama’ Makes Your Kids Use All Fours

January 18th, 2013
mama-movie

"When is Mama coming to theaters? I want it to be released so I don’t have to watch those freaky trailers anymore." That’s a question/statement I’ve received multiple times over the last week, and one that really says it all: the trailers for Mama are some of the scariest to hit theaters in a long time. However, the more important question is: does Mama live up to the marketing?

The Last Stand Review: Arnold is Back!

January 17th, 2013
last-stand-arnold-schwarzenegger

In his first starring role since he became the Governator, Arnold is undeniably back in The Last Stand, a deliciously silly action movie that works in all the right ways. Though the perfect Austrian is older and creakier than ever, he hasn’t lost his charm or physical presence – and most importantly, his ability to entertain.

Review: Richard Gere Commands ‘Arbitrage’

Richard Gere turns in another underrated performance in Arbitrage, a thriller that is good until it loses steam in the waning minutes.

Review: Does ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’ Deserve Oscars?

January 16th, 2013
beasts-of-the-southern-wild

Nominated for four Oscars including Best Director and Best Picture, Beasts of the Southern Wild has come out nowhere with its story of survival, courage and tough love. Though undeserving of its award nominations, Beasts is still an engaging movie that focuses on a part of America rarely seen.

Review: ‘The Possession’ Will Not Possess You

January 15th, 2013
the-possession-2012

Why are movies presented by respectable directors always so lackluster? Sam Raimi for some reason "presented" The Possession, a movie that begs another question: do we really need yet another movie about a little girl being possessed by a demon?

Review: ‘The Inbetweeners’ Isn’t Original, But Fun

January 14th, 2013
inbetweeners-movie

In the vein of every movie about awkward teenagers attempting to lose their virginity, The Inbetweeners Movie follows four friends as they travel to a tropical locale to have some fun and get laid (or at the very least don’t embarrass themselves). Based on a British television show, the movie defies expectations to be one of the funnier movies of the year.

Review: ‘Frankenweenie’ is Tim Burton’s Best Movie in Years

January 13th, 2013
frankenweenie

I grew out of love with Tim Burton long ago, in reverse correlation to the box office success the director has seen over the last decade. But it’s his smaller, more reserved movies that continue to impress me – Big Fish back in 2003, and now Frankenweenie, a stop-motion capture film that did little from a financial perspective but deserves recognition nonetheless.

Review: ‘Compliance’ is as Maddening as the True Story

January 13th, 2013
compliance-movie

Inspired by real events, Compliance tells the disturbing story of just how far people would go if they believed they were cooperating with law enforcement.
