Movie Trailer Review: Iron Man Toughs It Out

February 29th, 2008

Iron Man PictureIf you’re any kind of comic book fan, you’ve already checked out the spanking new movie trailer for the upcoming Iron Man movie. All I can say is: this looks good, but not that good.

Once again, the teaser trailer rocked; the movie trailer just underwhelms a little bit. The teaser trailer was very serious and action-oriented, whereas the Iron Man movie trailer has a lot more humor and silly stuff. Not exactly the kind of things I like to see.

That being said, the comedy in Iron Man is pretty funny. Tony Stark’s suit fails on him mid-flight, and he goes crashing through a roof and into an expensive car. Gwenyth Paltrow walks in on him getting the suit assembled, but she’s seen him in “more awkward situations.” Funny, but funny doesn’t bring me to these kinds of movies.

With a full movie trailer, I want to see a little bit of plot and a lot of action, and the Iron Man movie trailer lacks that to some extent. Only a smidgen more of the plot is revealed than was in the teaser trailer, and the teaser trailer actually sets up the attack sequence in the beginning much better. The trailer focuses heavily on Stark making and putting together his suit, which, in my opinion, is a bad move. It’s this kind of thing that stretches the bounds of reality, and fans on the fence might be turned off by that kind of thing. For me, personally, I don’t care how the suit is made or how Stark puts it on – I want to see him use it.

I’m sure another Iron Man movie trailer will come along soon enough, especially since this one’s a bit underwhelming. I still have high hopes, but the trailer is just a bit poorly constructed in a few places.

The Love Guru Movie Trailer Really Sucks

February 28th, 2008

Has anyone watched the new movie trailer for The Love Guru, the Mike Myers/Jessica Alba movie? It is absolutely dreadful. The only funny part in the whole preview is Justin Timberlake’s cameo as he walks around in an overly tight Speedo, but even that’s barely funny.

The Love Guru stars Myers as a “guru” from India, apparently, who travels to the U.S. to get a Maple Leafs hockey player back together with his girlfriend before the Stanley Cup. Jessica Alba gets involved somehow, but the trailer never explains her purpose other than to look hot. Regardless, this movie looks dreadful beyond belief. Myers isn’t even remotely funny, his character sounds like a poor amalgam of his more popular characters (surprise, surprise) and there isn’t a joke to be seen for the whole two minutes.

Movie Trailer Review: Get Smart Gets Less Funny

February 28th, 2008

Get Smart Movie PosterThe full movie trailer for the new Get Smart movie came out today, and while it still looks pretty funny, it doesn’t look nearly as funny as the Get Smart teaser trailer made it out to be.

The teaser trailer showed only a couple key scenes, but they were well constructed and perfectly timed. The phone booth scene is priceless and set the stage for the rest of the preview, but that scene is suspiciously missing from this full movie trailer.

Painful Moment of Truth Video – Love, Adultery and No Money

February 26th, 2008

If you haven’t seen this video clip from The Moment of Truth, you have to watch it now. I’d never watched the show before and don’t plan to watch it in the future, but while driving to work today, I heard Jackie and Bender talking about it on KISS. So, first thing I did when I got to work was to look this puppy up on YouTube, and I must say it is one of the most painful things you’ll ever watch.

Basically, it’s about this young woman who’s in the hot seat, who gets confronted by her ex-boyfriend with the question: “If I were to ask you to get back together with me, would you leave your husband?” Her husband is sitting on stage at the time. That question is followed up by EVEN MORE PAINFUL questions.

Needless to say, The Moment of Truth certainly caught my attention. It’s sad that I find this entertaining, but she had to know what she was getting herself into:

Gary Busey Freaks Out Jennifer Garner

February 25th, 2008

If you missed it, watch this funny video of Gary Busey kissing Jennifer Garner on the neck and “making her nervous” on the red carpet at the Oscars. Busey continues to play into his stereotype that he’s a bit off his rocker – Laura Linney actually pulls Garner away like friends do at a bar when a sleazy guy is hitting on them. Of course, see for yourself:

The X-Files 2 Bootleg Movie Trailer

February 24th, 2008

A bootleg teaser trailer for The X-Files 2 from Wondercon has made its way online. It’s a little hard to tell exactly what the movie is about, but the shots of Mulder and Scully certainly draw great crowd reactions. Check out the movie trailer below, and hopefully an official version will arrive online soon enough.

The Happening (2008) Trailer and Trailer Review

February 16th, 2008

The teaser trailer for M. Night Shyalaman’s upcoming movie The Happening is online now. The movie looks pretty good, though I am skeptical after Shyalaman’s last two films (The Village and The Lady in the Water). Lady in the Water was particularly bad, while The Village just failed to live up to expectations set by Shyalaman’s other films.

The Happening stars Mark Wahlberg as a man who takes his family on the run as people around the world begin to die off to what appears to be at first a biological attack, then a natural biological disaster, and then something else much more ominous. The teaser trailer, as it is called despite having a running time of over two minutes, is pretty good. What does “pretty good mean”? It doesn’t capture the attention nearly as much as those for The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable or Signs, as it does not manage to establish the sense of any immediate suspense or thrilling moments. The teaser trail is a tad subdued, perhaps too much for its own good, and at the same time I have to give it to the marketing department for depicting the movie as a little different from Shyalaman’s other films. After all, his credibility has turned from near Spielberg-esque appreciation to muted hesitation, and something other than his name is needed to get people into seats.

The presence of Wahlberg, the different look to the film and the epic scale of the film do favor The Happening, and I am certainly intrigued to see what Shyalaman has in store for us. I’m actually hoping he doesn’t have a twist ending built into this one, though I might change my mind once I’m sitting in the theater. Regardless, I’m intrigued, though the marketing department will have to work hard to convince people that The Happening is more of the old Shyalaman than of the new; good reviews will also be necessary.

Indiana Jones 4 Teaser Trailer Review

February 16th, 2008

The teaser trailer for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is now online, as I’m sure you know. Easily one of the most anticipated sequel of all times, the fourth Indiana Jones returns Harrison Ford to what is arguably his most memorable role (or is that Han Solo?). Karen Allen also returns, and new faces such as Shia LaBeouf and Cate Blanchett are involved.

The teaser trailer is just that: a teaser trailer. There’s nothing that gives away the plot, and basically is broken into three sections:

  • An intro, covering the past three movies
  • The return of Indy, first seen as a shadow
  • A bunch of action scenes

All I can say is that I’m a little underwhelmed by the teaser trailer. It isn’t bad, but it isn’t magnificent, either. I don’t like the opening to the teaser trailer, which tries to label Indiana Jones as a savior to the human race; while maybe he is, I’ve never thought of his character as such, and this trailer seems to make him out to be some superhero. Once it gets past the intro, however, the trailer picks up well enough. The action looks pretty good (though the special effects are a tiny bit questionable)… My only other complaint is that Harrison Ford’s one liners really aren’t that great. It would have been nice to hear him say something a little longer than two or three words; as such, his lines are so short and sweet they don’t give you a chance to laugh.

I would have preferred to see a quick little intro, a bunch of action and one established scene with some funny dialogue. My expectations for this Indiana Jones movie are high, and thus my expectations for the marketing are even higher; this teaser trailer is good, but it could have been better.

George A. Romero’s Diary of the Dead Trailer, and Trailer Review

January 11th, 2008

Watch the new movie trailer for George A. Romero’s Diary of the Dead, the latest “sequel” in his Night of the Living Dead series. This latest picture looks like more of a re-imagining than a sequel, as it is about a bunch of young people who witness the beginning of zombies coming back to life (whereas Land of the Dead was a continuation from his previous films).

Frankly, Diary of the Dead doesn’t look all that good. I mean, it’s hard to really mess up a zombie picture, but Romero’s decision to go with a Blair Witch hand held camera approach isn’t the greatest. After all, who would run around with a camera the whole time? Basically, compared to some of the more exciting zombie films that have come out in recent years, Romero’s takes on the zombie franchise are starting to look old. He should quick while he is still regarded as “the master of zombie movies”.

Here’s the movie trailer for George A. Romero’s Diary of the Dead:

Captain Jack Sparrow Burglar – Funny Video

January 9th, 2008

I watched this video while at work today… the dumbest people make for the greatest entertainment, don’t they? The video is real security footage of a wannabe burglar trying to break in to a coffee shop in Lakewood, WA… the problem is that this persistent burglar is an idiot. Instead of breaking in to the coffee shop, the man proceeds to circle the building several times trying to get in through doors, windows and probably the walls. Oh, did I mention he wasn’t wearing gloves and manages to place not only his fingerprints but whole hand prints all over the place?

To cap things off, his final attempt to break in includes a running kick, which causes him to dislocate his knee.

Watch this funny burglar, dubbed the Captain Jack Sparrow burglar due to his pirate motif, which has a great voice over by the coffee shop’s sarcastic owner. You can also read the full story at King 5 News.

Movie Trailer: In Bruges (2008)

November 22nd, 2007

Alliance Films has just posted the new movie trailer for In Bruges, starring Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Ralph Fiennes. Farrell plays a hit man who takes refuge in a small town, only to find that his orders to stay under the radar are more challenging than first thought when he realizes that Bruges is not exactly the most exciting town.

The Video Game Marching Band

November 17th, 2007

Okay, here’s what I have to say about marching bands: I don’t see the point. First off, I’ll note that I’m from the northwest, not exactly an area known for its marching bands or its interest in them. Apparently, in some parts of the United States, marching bands are big things, but up here, they aren’t anything spectacular. At football game halftimes, why would I want to listen to a barely audible band that walks around doing sluggish designs, et cetera, et cetera?

However, in this Cal vs. Washington State game, the marching band does something really, really awesome. In a homage to video games, they simulate – with their collective bodies – several classic video games. Which video games? Let us list them: Pong, Tetris, Mortal Kombat, Pokemon, Legend of Zelda, and various Mario stages. Don’t believe me? Watch the video below…

Bootleg Cloverfield Trailer

November 16th, 2007

The new Cloverfield trailer – which confirms the name of Cloverfield for a project that has had more rumors and buzz than any I can imagine in recent history – has found its way onto YouTube, albeit in a very low quality format. Still, it looks pretty exciting… Check it out below.
