Terminator: Salvation Movie Trailer: Forgiveness for McG?

December 11th, 2008

Terminator 4 PictureAs Kirk would say, I will never forgive McG for the making of Charlie’s Angels 2. At least, I haven’t yet.

Charlie’s Angels 2 was one of the worst movies ever made, highlighted by horrid special effects and painful direction. Complemented by the fact that I am repulsed by anyone who would go by the singular “McG,” I immediately put him on my Hate List along with Stephen Sommers, Uwe Boll and a few others.

Of course, when you look at his credits, Charlie’s Angels 2 is his only true, unmitigated disaster. The first Charlie’s Angels, while in hindsight not that great, was pretty entertaining, and his only other major directorial piece is We Are Marshall, which wasn’t half bad.

Dragonball Movie Trailer Fizzles, Not Sparks

December 10th, 2008

Dragonball Z movieI just watched the movie trailer for Dragonball, the live-action adaptation of whatever Dragonball is (a cartoon series, I believe), and as expected, it looks pretty stupid. Despite the presence of Chow Yun-Fat, Dragonball looks like nothing more than a B-grade kung fu action film fused with cheesy special effects.

I know there are some people who are rabidly anticipating this picture, but for the regular moviegoer, I see this one crashing and burning. The best kung fu movies are the ones that feel realistic and use minimal special effects, whereas Dragonball, out of necessity, has to go to the other extreme. Furthermore, the glossy, bright colors just make it look like a second-tier film, and I don’t think there’s anything the marketing department will be able to do to hide that fact.

By the way, Justin Chatwin’s hair absolutely drives me crazy.

You can watch the Dragonball movie trailer here. What are your thoughts?

Sunshine Cleaning Movie Trailer Review

December 9th, 2008

I just watched the new movie trailer for the upcoming film Sunshine Cleaning, and it looks pretty good. From the producers of Little Miss Sunshine (their next film is called The Dark in the Darkness), the movie is about two house-cleaners (Amy Adams and Emily Blunt) who decide to open their own crime scene cleaning business to rake in the real dough. Puking at the smell of dead people occurs.

As with the aforementioned Oscar-nominated film, Sunshine Cleaning just likes like a nice, laid back comedy that never takes itself too seriously while still delivering a “serious” story and believable characters. Adams and Blunt are both on a roll right now, so I hope this one does well.

Here’s the Sunshine Cleaning movie trailer:

New Curious Case of Benjamin Button Video Clips

It’s buzzing with Oscar glory right now, still several weeks away from its Christmas release, but Paramount has sent me (and, assuredly, every other blogger and their mothers) several video clips from The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which stars Brad Pitt, Tilda Swinton and Cate Blanchett.

The Curious Case for Benjamin Button Video Clip #2: Under the Table

The Curious Case for Benjamin Button Video Clip #3: Meeting in the Middle

The Curious Case for Benjamin Button Video Clip #4: I Came Home

Movie Trailer Review: Star Trek (2009)

November 15th, 2008

Star Trek SpockIf you went ye old theatre house this weekend to see Quantum of Solace (looking at a $75 million weekend… what did I say, box office experts???), then you’ve probably seen the exciting new movie trailer for the upcoming J.J. Abrams sci-fi film Star Trek. Supposedly, the trailer is based some little known TV and movie series that started a few decade ago. I don’t know what much about it, but the movie looks pretty damn good.

It starts off a tad weak, looking like a new trailer for Fast and Furious as someone races across the desert – toward a massive cliff – in an apparent chase. At the last second, the car swerves and the driver is thrown from it; as the car plummets over the side, the driver – a boy – manages to scramble to safety, his legs dangling over the precipice. His pursuer asks his name, and the boy stands up defiantly and blurts out, a little too loudly, “James Tiberius Kirk.” Oh shit, it’s the Star Trek trailer!

These kind of intro scenes, featuring a boy version of a known character, can be at times jarring. Especially spliced and diced for the trailer, hence taken out of context, the scene comes in as a little underwhelming, mainly due to the forced announcement of the character’s name. Minor details, though.

We are immediately thrust into a series of montages – in other words, the trailer is more an extended teaser than anything else – of Kirk and Spock pre-Enterprise days, and at the building of the Enterprise. Then comes the action, and there’s lots of it: creepy looking villains, space battles, giant monsters and more. This is clearly going to be a darker Star Trek, and J.J. Abrams has taken it a little closer to the Star Wars world in terms of action, which is good as that, in my opinion, has always been an argument against the Trek franchise (you look at Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Star Wars, which essentially came out around the same time, and you tell me that one doesn’t have action sequences that are 20 years beyond the other). There’s also a little more emphasis on sex and sexuality in the trailer, which adds a bit of spice to it all.

At the same time, there are plenty of items to ensure Trekkies that the world isn’t completely being f**ked up; the sounds, the spacecraft and, hell, even Zachary Quinto as Spock look like they were pulled from the old series, only improved. The big question mark will be how the rather odd cast – namely Chris Pine – holds up to the rabid comparisons that are sure to follow. That may be make or break for the Trekkies.

This trailer, which really is just a long teaser, does a good job of setting the stage, giving us a bit of footage and a feel for the action, and making Star Trek, perhaps for the first time in several decades, appeal to broader audiences. It isn’t perfect, and I don’t think it has that “blow ‘em away” feel that I was hoping for, but it’s a great first step.

Midnight Meat Train: Watch the Full Movie Now

Midnight Meat Train looked like a pretty freaky and gory movie, but didn’t get much play in theaters. MovieWeb, however, has posted the full movie online:

The Sarah Palin Song, or Why Sarah Palin is Wrong for the USA

October 31st, 2008

My friend Jessie forwarded me this video the other day, called the Sarah Palin Song. The video is basically two (very bad) singers serenading how ridiculous Sarah Palin is, and I tend to agree. Anyone who describes the Vice President’s job as “in charge of the Senate” (and no, not just to 3rd graders) and doesn’t believe the dinosaurs existed just shouldn’t be in any office of power. I wouldn’t have nearly as much of an issue with John McCain if he had picked another running mate, but since he went with the Republican token female who refuses to do interviews (though I don’t blame her after the Katie Couric incident), I couldn’t possibly vote for him: after all, the risk of him dying and Palin becoming the most powerful person in the world is just too great.

So come on, people. Vote for Obama. You may not agree with all his policies, but few would disagree that he’s a smart guy. I know that’s not enough to warrant becoming President, but even you Republicans have to be hesitant about a McCain/Palin presidency. Anyway, here’s the Sarah Palin Song:

5-Minute The Day the Earth Stood Still Movie Trailer

October 30th, 2008

Check out this sweet five-minute movie trailer for The Day the Earth Stood Still, which stars Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly. I was a bit wishy washy after the first teaser trailer, but this extended movie trailer presents some pretty damn cool scenes. Watch the trailer here:

Dark Streets Movie Trailer

October 28th, 2008

I was W. on Monday night and saw this cool new movie trailer for a flick called Dark Streets. It’s hard to tell exactly what the movie is going to be like, but based on the previews, the film looks like a more subdued Moulin Rouge with a less romantic focus. The plot isn’t quite clear, but it appears as though it’s set in the 1920′s and features a murder or crime or something along those lines. Anyway, check out the Dark Streets movie trailer below:

My Bloody Valentine 3D Movie Trailer

October 26th, 2008

I don’t know what to make of this one. The novelty of a 3D horror movie is compelling, as you could definitely get some good scares out of knives or pick axes flying at your face, but I’m still not sold on 3D in general. The movies made for 3D seem to be gimmicks, as the directors focus more on the visuals than storytelling. My Bloody Valentine 3D seems prime for such a massacre; the movie trailer isn’t particularly effective, other than marketing the gimmick. The movie looks generic, the scares dull and the acting bad, but, like I said, I think it’d be fun to see in theaters. Of course, I’ll probably still end up hating it.

Friday the 13th: Teaser Trailer

October 23rd, 2008

Check out the decent little teaser trailer for Friday the 13th below. The teaser trailer is from SCREAM 2008, as is not a normal, theatrical teaser trailer by any means. Basically, a couple wanders across an abandoned summer camp and discover what it’s like to be filleted like a fish.

I am not a fan of the Friday the 13th movies at all – as I believe they suck royal suckage – but I am looking forward to seeing what a re-imagining can do to Jason. Hell, it can only be better than the crap that has been produced over the last 20 years.

Australia: International Movie Trailer

October 23rd, 2008

Watch the international trailer for Australia, the new Baz Luhrman film that stars Aussies Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman. The movie looks OK, but I still have high hopes.

The Uninvited Movie Trailer: No Tale of Two Sisters

October 19th, 2008

This was released last week, but I’m just getting to it now, so deal with it! Here’s the movie trailer for The Uninvited, which is based on one of my all-time favorite horror movies, A Tale of Two Sisters. Needless to say, expectations are high with me… or, in other words, really, really low. After all, this Asian horror remakes seem to be getting worse and worse, and judging by The Uninvited movie trailer, this one is going to suck.

The great thing about A Tale of Two Sisters was that it was subtle, almost a drama in some ways, except that it was pretty damn freaky. The Uninvited looks like a cliche and uninteresting teen horror movie with all the typical, boring ghost elements that American directors like to use. The Uninvited is uninvited in my opinion.

Here’s the movie trailer so you can decide for yourself:

New Transporter 3 Movie Trailer

October 12th, 2008

Check out the latest movie trailer for Transporter 3, which once again stars Jason Statham. The movie looks like it should satisfy fans of the previous flicks, as it will contain plenty of ludicrous action. While I prefer more realistic action, I must admit that I have a small soft spot for the Transporter movies; I’ll probably wait until DVD, but am looking forward to this one. The final few moments of the trailer leave little to be desired; Statham driving a car on the top of a train is, shall we say, stupid?

Here’s the new Transporter 3 movie trailer:
