Will The Mechanic Be Any Good?

January 19th, 2011
the-mechanic-jason-statham

Jason Statham has yet another generic action movie coming to theaters soon, this one titled The Mechanic. The good thing about generic Jason Statham action movies: they’re often better than most generic action movies. In fact, the guy should have a sub-genre named after him as Statham has found some success doing frenetic, plot-free action films.

January 8th, 2011
sundancenow

Netflix has some new competition from a recognizable brand: Sundance, specifically an on-demand website branded SundanceNow. But how big of a threat is SundanceNow to Netflix’s dominance?

I doubt they’ve even blinked.

Could the G.I. Joe Sequel Actually Be Good?

January 5th, 2011
gi-joe-scarlett

It couldn’t be much worse.

The first G.I. Joe was a piece of crap. Bad writing, bad acting and laughable special effects all made it what it was. I blame Stephen Sommers. After all, he is a pretty lousy director who got lucky with The Mummy and managed to trick studios into thinking that he can make good movies.

Netflix Instant Play with an International Flavor

November 9th, 2010

To most, the word ‘anime’ conjures up images of children with eyes that are way too big, looking surprised under a spiky mane of improbably colored hair with high, squeaky voices spouting pseudo-silly clichés with little regard to the actual context of the aforementioned trite remarks.

It’s Halloween, which means it’s horror movie time! While many people will be out on the town Saturday night, Halloween itself falls on a Sunday – which means that most people will be at home, recovering from the night before and ready to watch some movies (oh, and some football). There are plenty of horror movies to choose from, but that’s just the problem! Where do you start? Most horror movies are crap, but there are also many great classics – and hidden gems.

The Six Best Bruce Willis Movies

October 13th, 2010

Bruce Willis is one of those actors who’s hard to hate. He may not see an Oscar in his life, but he’s earned the respect of any legitimate action fan. He’s had his fair share of bad movies, but even in those he’s the best part. He can be a bad ass and likable at the same time. Look at Die Hard with a Vengeance. The Fifth Element. Hell, even Surrogates. Bad ass, but likable.

Bruce Willis is one of many big names starring in the ensemble action-comedy Red, which opens this Friday. This seems like the perfect time to reflect back on the venerable actor’s career and highlight his best movies.

October 5th, 2010

For those of you who loved 300, at least liked Watchmen, the Superman project just got a whole lot more interesting. Several names have been circling the rumor mill in recent weeks, but the winner to direct the new Superman is Zack Snyder.

Christopher Nolan is overseeing the project as producer and David Goyer is writing the screenplay.

Superman will likely kick ass as a result.

Tony Gilroy: The Bourne Legacy Director

October 4th, 2010

Waiting for a new Bourne Identity movie? Universal Pictures has hired Tony Gilroy to direct the sequel, titled The Bourne Legacy. Gilroy will also write the film like he did the last three – so at least there’s some consistency there.

Gone is Paul Greengrass, who took the franchise from being a moderate hit to a worldwide blockbuster, effectively making the James Bond movies look antiquated.

Is Gilroy an adequate replacement?

The Ender’s Game Movie: New Director, New Worries

September 22nd, 2010

Most of you reading this article are likely fans of the Orson Scott Card novel “Ender’s Game.” That also means that most of you are frustrated beyond belief that the Ender’s Game movie has spent years in development hell. The book is, to be frank, one of the best books in existence. In fact, I’ll go out on a limb and say it is my favorite book of all time. Even more than “All the King’s Men,” which is a pretty damn good book.

August 11th, 2010

Animal Kingdom is the gritty and violent debut feature from talented writer/director David Michod.   Set in the dangerous Melbourne underworld, Animal Kingdom revolves around a young man thrust into a family of crime and the severe consequences that result.  Michod has crafted a near great yet slightly flawed film.

Summer Movie Guide: 10 Movies to See in August 2010

August 6th, 2010

The summer movie season is fading. It is, after all, August.  Unfortunately, the bad movies (G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra) far outweigh the good (The Sixth Sense) in this miserable month as studios drop the projects they at one point thought were worthy of greatness but have pretty much acknowledged most audiences would rather take a power drill to their skulls than watch the crap they’ve produced. Still, August – as with every month – promises one or two movies worth seeing, and 2010 is no different.

Caged In: One-dimensional Performances Dodge Actor’s Career

July 13th, 2010

“Why couldn’t you put the bunny back in the box?”

It’s one of the more poorly delivered lines in an otherwise enjoyable film. Devoid of emotion, uttered with all the enthusiasm of a character that is more than half asleep, that bit of dialogue typified the overall performance of the lead character in the 1997 action flick.

The Career of M. Night Shyamalan: To Love or Hate

June 29th, 2010

More divisive than the Health-Care debate, more controversial than immigration reform, more polarizing than the red state/blue state divide is…the relationship moviegoers have with M. Night Shyamalan. Few filmmakers in history provoke such strong emotions by the mere mention of their name – go ahead, try it, ask anyone what their thoughts are on Shyamalan and you’re bound to receive a passionate – and wholly unique – response. That’s right: unique. Love him or hate him, his work provokes passionate opinions, which is far more than can be said about most filmmakers nowadays; whereas directing has become largely generic, Shyamalan is, if nothing else, a true original.
