Review: ‘Alex Cross’ is the Best Kind of Awful

October 19th, 2012
alex-cross-tyler-perry

The funniest movie of the year is Alex Cross. Tyler Perry stars in the serious crime thriller, which accomplishes two great feats: it made me laugh so hard I cried, and it reminded me why I avoid Tyler Perry movies at all costs.

Review: Lola Versus

October 18th, 2012
lola-versus

Indie darling Greta Gerwig, who won praise for her role in Ben Stiller’s Greenberg, stars in Lola Versus, an amusing and fast-paced drama about a young woman whose life is turned upside down when her fiancée freaks out and leaves her shortly before their wedding, forcing her back into the up-and-down reality of single life.

abraham-lincoln-vampire-hunter

Abraham Lincoln is often regarded as the greatest president to have served the United States of America. He helped abolish slavery. He sacrificed the lives of many Americans to reunite the north and south. He singlehandedly saved the country from a legion of vampires.

Review: ‘Wuthering Heights’ Whimpers in the Wind

October 16th, 2012
wuthering-heights

What did I just watch. In her follow-up to the critically praised drama Fish Tank, director Andrea Arnold goes full period piece, offering an emotionally flat and confusing adaptation of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights.

Review: ‘The Master’ is No Masterpiece

October 15th, 2012
master-joaquin-phoenix

Five years after There Will Be Blood, Paul Thomas Anderson returns with The Master, a drama loosely based on the founding of Scientology. The movie stars Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix as master and apprentice, respectively, and while they turn in powerful, Oscar-worthy performances, the final result is a drawn out, even boring film.

Blu-ray Review: Prometheus, Round Two

October 13th, 2012
prometheus-michael-fassbender

“Questions will be answered” is the tagline for the Blu-ray release of Prometheus, featuring never-before-seen extras including an alternate beginning and ending. That’s a lofty promise, considering one of the biggest complaints about Ridley Scott’s anticipated return to the sci-fi genre – and the Alien franchise – was that the movie raised many more questions than it answered.

Review: Argo Sets the Best Picture Bar

October 12th, 2012
argo

Tense. Thrilling. Entertaining. Serious. Funny. Ben Affleck has a legitimate Oscar contender on his hands in the form of Argo, a movie that is not only his most accessible film but also his best suited to appeal to Oscar voters. About a so-absurd-it-has-to-be-real CIA mission to extract six American hostages from Iran, Argo is at once timely and nail-bitingly fun.

Review: ‘The Paperboy’ Will Shove a Camera in Your Crotch

October 11th, 2012
paperboy-nicole-kidman

From the director of the oppressive Oscar-winning film Precious comes another in-your-face and disturbing drama called The Paperboy, a 1960′s era drama-thriller-romance-something that is wholly unpredictable, though not necessarily for the better.

If you like Pam from “The Office” – or at least pre-marriage Pam from the early seasons – then you’ll enjoy The Giant Mechanical Man, a sweet and offbeat romantic comedy starring Jenna Fischer that has gone largely overlooked by mainstream audiences.

October 9th, 2012
cat-in-paris

A cat burglar steals a necklace and a cat puts the police on his trail in the entertaining and imaginative cartoon A Cat in Paris, an Oscar-nominated animated thriller that defies expectations and pleases on all the right levels. With a running time of only 62 minutes, it’s also an extremely quick watch.

Review: ‘The Intouchables’ Gets a Rare A+ Review

October 7th, 2012
intouchables

There’s a serious problem with American audiences. Most do not like foreign films. Subtitles. People who speak other languages. No special effects. It’s a serious problem because films like The Intouchables (Intouchables) go largely overlooked in the States, despite the movie being an international box office hit (nearly $400 million and counting) and one of the best movies of the 21st century.
