Watch the Thriller ‘Headhunters’ This Week

September 4th, 2012
headhunters-movie

This time of year sucks for movies. The films being released to theaters suck, and most of the movies coming out to DVD suck. But there was one film that was released on DVD last week that you probably didn’t pay much attention to. Why? Because you haven’t heard of it. Why? Because it’s a foreign film.

September 3rd, 2012

With summer fading and the summer movie season pooping out little nuggets of forgettable movies, it was time to turn to Netflix for entertainment. Though the service has gotten hammered over the last couple years, it still has a rich database of streaming movies as long as you’re willing to reach into the past. Here are a few movies and television shows that caught my eye…

First there was Alec Baldwin. Then Harrison Ford. Oh yeah, and Ben Affleck. Now, Chris Pine looks to bring the popular Tom Clancy character into the 21st century with Jack Ryan, an original story that looks at the character’s beginnings as a CIA operative.

Paramount Pictures has released the first two movie images from the upcoming film, which is scheduled to be released on December 25, 2013. The action-thriller also stars Keira Knightley, Kevin Costner and Kenneth Branagh.

Mark Wahlberg’s Best Performances

August 30th, 2012
mark-wahlberg

Mark Wahlberg is one of the most successful actors in Hollywood today.  There’s simply no doubt about it.  At only the age of 41, his 20-plus films have amassed a total of $1.75 billion at the box office, which puts him 28th on the list all time.  Not bad for a guy who didn’t even make the cut for the 90′s boy band New Kids on the Block.

August 29th, 2012
lawless-movie

The late summer doldrums end with a bang as Lawless rolls into theaters, a dramatized true story of moonshining brothers who are pitted against a ruthless police officer. Despite featuring great performances and a violent story, however, Lawless fails to be the sum of its part.

Review: ‘Battleship’ Invades Blu-ray, Still Sucks

August 27th, 2012
battleship

In May, Universal Pictures released a sci-fi action movie with a $260 million budget with the misguided thinking that people wanted to watch a cheesy movie based on a nearly unrelated classic Hasbro game. This said movie, which will remain nameless until the next sentence, earned $300 million worldwide, but after marketing and print costs are taken into account, it can only be described as a massive flop.

The 9 Best Joseph Gordon-Levitt Movies

August 24th, 2012

Ever since his career-making turn in 1999′s 10 Things I Hate About You, Joseph Gordon-Levitt has proven he has an eye for choosing rewarding, versatile projects (we’ll ignore G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra). Joseph Gordon-Levitt is one of the most talented actors working today, and while he has yet to earn an Academy Award nomination, it’s only a matter of time.

With The Dark Knight Rises still plugging along and the Gordon-Levitt-starring Premium Rush in theaters this week, now is a perfect time to look at the accomplished actor’s best movies.

The Jason Bourne franchise is one of the best franchises in the business, even if Universal was dumb enough to try to continue it without its main character. But we’ll forgive them, just this once. Here are the nine most kick-ass scenes from the four Jason Bourne movies.

Late Review: Salmon Fishing in the Yemen

August 20th, 2012
salmon-fishing-in-the-yemen

From the director of What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Cider House Rules, Chocolat and The Shipping News comes Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, a low-key romantic drama about two people who find chemistry through the oddest of avenues: a project to introduce salmon fishing into the deserts of Yemen. Hence the title.

Nicolas Cage Steals Another Movie in ‘Stolen’

August 20th, 2012

Last time Nicolas Cage and director Simon West joined forces, the absurdly entertaining Con-Air was the result. Oh, times have changed. Fifteen years later, the action genre has evolved, Nicolas Cage’s career has devolved and their collaboration is being released to limited theaters – a troubling trend for the once popular actor.

August 19th, 2012

How would you like to be a part of making a new movie? A new movie by visionary filmmaker Charlie Kaufman? Of course you do.

Charlie Kaufman, who wrote Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and, one of my favorites, Adaptation, is writing his first stop-motion animated film. Titled Anomalisa, the movie is about a man crippled by the mundanity of his life.

The Expendables 2 Wins the Box Office Battle, Not the War

August 19th, 2012
expendables-2-poster

Sylvestor Stallone and his crew of over-the-hill action buddies from yesteryear won the box office battle, just like they were expected to. The Expendables 2 earned an estimated $28.75 million, a fair start for a mid-August release. Not for a sequel that features bigger roles for Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis.
