August 19th, 2012
expendables-2-poster

Sylvestor Stallone and his crew of over-the-hill action buddies from yesteryear won the box office battle, just like they were expected to. The Expendables 2 earned an estimated $28.75 million, a fair start for a mid-August release. Not for a sequel that features bigger roles for Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis.

Oh boy, is Arnold Schwarzenegger back. Not only does he make his post-governator debut in The Expendables 2 this weekend, but, not at all coincidentally, Lionsgate has premiered the first trailer for his 2013 action movie The Last Stand, where Schwarzenegger plays a sheriff who becomes the last roadblock for a pack of violent criminals.

paradise-lost-3

The third and presumably last documentary in the Paradise Lost series, the Oscar-nominated film Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory takes a continued look at the three teenagers known as the West Memphis Three, who were convicted of murdering three eighty-year-old boys during a satanic cult despite a severe lack of evidence. Unlike the previous two documentaries, the movie ends on a positive note, as the three boys – now in their thirties – are finally released from prison.

In 1994, blond-haired, blue-eyed thirteen-year-old Nicholas Barclay disappeared from his home in Texas. Three years later, he reemerged in Spain. His family accepted him back with open arms. Except the boy who moved into their home was not Nicholas, and he wasn’t even a boy. He was Frédéric Bourdin, a 23-year old Frenchman with brown hair, brown eyes and an accent. The Imposter is the gripping new documentary about this unique and disturbing incident.

Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax is Now on Blu-Ray, So We Reviewed It

August 7th, 2012
lorax

Zany in more ways than one, Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax is a fun animated film that kids will love and parents will appreciate, unless you hate the environment. With a heavy handed message about nature and big industry and questionable musical numbers, The Lorax isn’t perfect, but is consistently enjoyable.

Total Recall Movie Review

August 4th, 2012
total-recall

Proof that action movies from the 1980′s and early 90′s are indeed better than modern action movies, the beloved Arnold Schwarzenegger cheese fest Total Recall gets the reboot treatment with a sleek, sexy but lifeless incarnation from director Len Wiseman.

When a movie costs less than $5 million to make and earns over $100 million domestically, you know it’s getting a[nother] sequel. The Paranormal Activity franchise returns with Paranormal Activity 4, another found footage horror movie that focuses on a cute blond teenage girl who likes to videotape herself, and who has the misfortune to live next to neighbors who may or may not be the freaky demon-possessed chick from the previous films.

Anticipation can be a bitch. Expectations can lead to disappointment. Hype can be a killer. Christopher Nolan’s epic conclusion to his Dark Knight trilogy has to deal with all three nuisances, and he flicks them aside like villain Bane does Batman, the entire Gotham police force and everyone else who makes the mistake of crossing his path.
