Five Movie Family Reunions to Avoid

July 19th, 2012
addams-family

To some people summer is about vacations, maybe hitting the lake or pool, relaxing, spending time with the kids – and there is that. But summer to me also means it’s time to look forward to the annual family reunion. Big family or small, summer seems to be the best time to gather the clan, catch up, enjoy some good food, take a lot of pictures and generally have a good time.

The Dark Knight Rises Review

July 17th, 2012
dark-knight-rises-batman

Anticipation can be a bitch. Expectations can lead to disappointment. Hype can be a killer. Christopher Nolan’s epic conclusion to his Dark Knight trilogy has to deal with all three nuisances, and he flicks them aside like villain Bane does Batman, the entire Gotham police force and everyone else who makes the mistake of crossing his path.

‘Intruders’ Holds True to a Theory About Horror Movies

July 17th, 2012
intruders

The scariest horror movie is the one that stars A-list talent. It is almost guaranteed that it will be self deluded into thinking it’s a horror movie worth seeing, and there’s nothing more frightening than a horror movie in denial.

Friends With Kids Movie Review

July 16th, 2012
friends-with-kids

Love. Happiness. Kids. Pick two. That’s the clever tagline from the movie Friends with Kids, a fun if ultimately forgettable romantic comedy that tries to be different but ultimately ends up exactly how you’d expect it to.

Cannes Winner ‘Elena’ Movie Review

July 15th, 2012

An old maid turned millionaire’s wife realizes that she’s going to be denied her husband’s inheritance and decides to do something about it in Elena, the 2011 winner of Cannes’ Un Certain Regard Special Jury Prize. Described as a Hitchcockian thriller but in reality a somber drama without a third act, Elena has a lot of good things going for it until it doesn’t, begging the question: what’s the point?

Take This Waltz Movie Review

July 13th, 2012
take-this-waltz-michelle-williams

If you ever wanted to see Seth Rogen in a serious movie… If you ever wanted to see Michelle Williams in yet another emotional drama… If you ever wanted to see full frontal nudity from Sarah Silverman… there’s Take This Waltz, the second full-length feature from Sarah Polley. At times cute, others moving, Take This Waltz is a mesmerizing little movie. I just wish I could remember how it ended.

Watch the Oz Great and Powerful Trailer!

July 13th, 2012
oz-great-and-powerful

Even after all this time, we’re [thankfully] not quite ready for a Wizard of Oz remake, but that’s not stopping Sam Raimi for directing the colorful Oz Great and Powerful, about a small-time circus magician named Oscar (James Franco) who is swept by – you guessed it – a tornado into the fantastical Land of Oz.

Margaret: The Epic Drama That Almost Wasn’t

July 10th, 2012
margaret-anna-paquin

Complex, star-studded and gripping, Margaret had serious potential for award contention – back when it was made in 2007. Five years later, the drama arrives on DVD and Blu-ray with a whimper, a victim of multiple edits, lawsuits and rumors. The final result, a 150-minute epic, is a paradox: it is simultaneously incredible and a muddled mess.

American Reunion Hits Blu-Ray, DVD and 57 Other Formats

July 9th, 2012
american-reunion

American Reunion is now available to own, and comes in so many formats half of the Blu-ray cover is devoted to explaining them all. The combo pack includes Blu-Ray, DVD, digital copy and Ultraviolet formats, and I’m pretty sure there is a way to watch it on your watch, too. Funny enough, there’s also an “All-New Movie” sticker on the package, which makes me think Universal is afraid that people will confuse the movie with the original American Pie.

July 8th, 2012
anna-karenina-poster

You may not be looking forward to the upcoming drama Anna Karenina, but I am. The movie is the latest movie from Joe Wright, who directed the excellent period dramas Pride & Prejudice and Atonement. And just like those movies, this one, about a high society Russian woman who begins to question her happiness and marriage when she meets a daring young man, stars Anna Karenina.

Oliver Stone Returns to Form with ‘Savages’

July 6th, 2012
savages-blake-lively

Look at Oliver Stone’s career from one side and you see a string of celebrated classics. Platoon. Wall Street. Born on the Fourth of July. The Doors. JFK. Natural Born Killers. Impressive. Look at his 21st century career, however, and it paints a different picture. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. W. World Trade Center. Alexander. A couple mediocre films. A few disasters.

Six New Blu-ray Releases You Should Own

July 5th, 2012
cocktail-ransom-bullhead

I typically try to write reviews for every individual Blu-ray I receive in the mail (well, the good ones), but after a crazy hectic June I came home late last week to find a stack of great movies sitting on my doorstep. All were released in the last few weeks, but the thought of tackling all of them was overwhelming. I won’t write about movies just because I receive them, but these six warrant attention:

The Amazing Spider-Man Movie Review

July 4th, 2012
amazing-spider-man-suit

Ten years and two months after Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man dominated theaters and advanced the comic book movie genre to a whole new level, the web slinger is back, restarting from scratch with a new origin story that is strangely reminiscent of the previous origin story. Cursed by its own lack of originality, The Amazing Spider-Man struggles mightily to shed the not-so-distant memory of its predecessors, but deep down there is a well done movie that sets the stage for some highly charged sequels.
